Classic Prague Pubs

Hi everybody,

Off to Prague again in early March and looking for some clever advice.

Now, we%26#39;ve been to some great Prague Pubs in the last few years, (u Medvidku, u Cerneho Vola, Zlateho Tygra) all brilliant.

Can anybody point us to a few more of the same ilk.

You know what i mean, great beer, good atmosphere, surly bar staff etc.

Thanks in advance

I wonder whether this link would be any good

U hrocha (The Hippopotamus) near the British Embassy is a must.

Then a random selection of U Pinkasů http://www.upinkasu.com/pe-home/ , U provaznice http://www.uprovaznice.cz/ , Kolkovna www.kolkovna.cz/index.php… - all a bit pricier than most (about 40 Crowns for a beer), but if you want the real thing you%26#39;ve got to go out of the centre and take your pick. I quite like this one when visiting friends www.dejvickasokolovna.cz/jidelnicek.pdf - all meals less than 100 Crowns and Gambrinus for 27 Crowns, or 35 for Pilsner Urquell. For the cheapest Pilsner Urquell in town (about 30 Crowns) try U Vejvodů www.restauraceuvejvodu.cz/…

Maybe %26#39;purists%26#39; might not agree with all (or any) of my selections, but you can give them a try.

But if you want the ultimate, then you need to go to Blahovka in Brno (I think I posted all the details before).

Have fun!

Thanks for that GCEK

Have been to u Vejvodu a few times, not everybodys cup of tea (or 0.5l of Pilsner) but have always enjoyed it there. u Hrocha is one for the list defo.

Anymore everybody?

GCEK

I don%26#39;t know if I mentioned it before, but last Easter we stayed close to U Vejvodu, in Betlemska sq. 2 days before easter it was 29 crowns for .5, and day before I watched the manager change the chalk board outside to 59!

Personally I thought that was a bit off :-(

Opposite U Vojvodu is a very nice tankova pub and cavern downstairs, not sure of name in Cz but I think it was The green tree, or big tree. Lots of locals, good beer and the food looked excellent (though we never tried it)

GeeMan

So try downstairs in this place opposite.

I can remember once waiting for a bus back to Brno at Florenc we spotted a sign sticking out of a wall down a side street with a picture of a glass of beer on it. It had no name, just %26#39;Pivnice%26#39; (pub), and if you can remember the scene in %26#39;Trainspotting%26#39; where he finds the worst toilet in Scotland, well it was a bit like that, but we had a fantastic time and it would have met all your criteria - this was a long time ago so it has possibly been razed to the ground by now, but that is the sort of place you have got to look out for, not these glitzy places that say they have been there for centuries. Well, they may have been there for a while, but previously they were as I described above and have just been tarted up a bit.

I just looked on www.mapy.cz to see if it was still there and the only one that was in its vicinity was this one http://www.classiccitybrew.com/prague.html with Staropramen at 24 Crowns and decently-priced meals. I can%26#39;t imagine that the dive we went to would ever have a website, though...

Another one in Brno if you ever make it is %26#39;U Čápa%26#39; on Obilní trh which hasn%26#39;t changed since about 1962, and neither have the personnel, menus and clientele - it even has an ancient black and white Tesla TV in the corner and the old-fashioned chipped jug glasses, but as it is opposite both the maternity hospital and the university you get an eclectic mix of expectant/new fathers and semi-comatose academics with a few artists/local notorieties, all alcoholics, thrown in.

I am sure that Prague is stuffed with such places as well - I don%26#39;t think you will get many people from this forum advising you of where they are, though, as they will no doubt be well off the tourist trail, and they are probably glad of it too :)

Just follow your nose - if it looks utterly horrible and smoky, then it will probably be a good%26#39;un :)

|||

I have no loyalty to any place, I just stop when I feel like it, and if it%26#39;s no good I move on. What else can you recommend?

|||

I posted the wrong link above - instead of the classic city brew, insert this one instead www.restauracearcha.cz/index.php… :)

Hi Gee man,

Just wondering if you ever made it to a Dukla match ?

I noticed in an earlier post you referred to Half Man Half Biscuit. I%26#39;ve been a massive follower of theirs for more than 2 decades. A lot of old indie music fans only seem to remember the 80s stuff, but their recent albums (including 2008%26#39;s CSI Ambleside)have been utterly brilliant - my namesake %26amp; fellow Wirralian Nigel Blackwell is quite simply the most intelligent songwriter in the world (and far too intelligent to ever want to be part of the %26quot;music business%26quot;). Indeed for the last decade or so I usually wear a Dukla Prague away kit to their gigs (lots of their fans, including my girlfriend, wear a Dukla Prague away shirt at the gigs, but I%26#39;m usually the only one in the full yellow away kit).

Anyway I%26#39;ve never been to a Dukla match, though I did make a pilgrimage to Pribram a few years ago to see the ground, and I bought the DP kit when my own footy team played in Czech about 9 years ago. Anyway, the kit has almost worn out now, so we%26#39;re planning a trip to Prague in March or April to buy a new one (Adidas makes the current one, which is a bonus). Well OK, we could try online, but it%26#39;s always good to have an excuse to visit Prague !

The shop on their website won%26#39;t work on my home or work computers -and I%26#39;m guessing their actual physical club shop is only open on match days (I%26#39;d be grateful if anyone who undestands Czech could look on the Dukla Prague website to confirm this info ?). With Dukla understandably having so few fans I%26#39;m guessing they don%26#39;t sell the kits in mainstream sports shops ? I remember 9 years ago when I got my kit you could buy Dukla stuff in the Sparta Praha club shop in the old town (not far from Charles bridge), but 2 years ago when I was last in Prague (before Dukla moved back to the Juliska) you couldn%26#39;t (they just had a t-shirt in home colours).

To be honest we%26#39;d prefer to go to watch Bohemians v. Dukla on the first weekend of March - I have some good contacts in the Bohemians Ultras, a very nice bunch, and certainly a more politically respectable club than Dukla, but I%26#39;m guessing to stock up on Dukla merchandise I can really only go to a Dukla home game when their shop is open?

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about whether it is currently possible to buy the Adidas yellow Dukla Praha away kits in any sports shops in Prague? I know it%26#39;s a bit of a specialist request, but there are other HMHB obsessives out there, I know there are ! Please let me know.

Cheers,

Nige

PS Bohemians are getting crowds of over 7 thousand this season, and the derby with Dukla is likely to be full or almost full.
