Prague hotel/activities recommendation

We are a family of four with two adolescent children. We have never been to Prague and are spending four days there next August.

Appreciated are any recommendations for where to stay - prefer a central location for sightseeing and a hotel with local character/charm/decor/food, etc. The hotels do not seem to accommodate 4 people. How do families manage this? Also with only a few days, what should we include in our itinerary (we like history and culture). Thank you!
