depending if you have a price range, others can provide some suggestions

|||

We stayed at the Betlem Club for four nights in the Old Town area three weeks ago. It is central yet quiet and close to everything. We enjoyed our stay there very much from helpful staff to atmosphere of the place which was once a mansion. Lots of cool restaurants and pubs blocks away. I felt that the Wencelas area was more commercial / clubby. It doesn%26#39;t really matter because if that is what you are into it is only a fifteen minute walk away... I don%26#39;t know your price range but we paid about sixty euro a night including a decent breakfast buffet at the Betlem. Enjoy...

|||

Debto,

We have just visited Prague for a long weekend, and we got ourselves a special deal for the quiet season at this hotel here ...I can%26#39;t recommend it highly enough - it was gorgeous !! It was very central, being just by the Powder Tower...

We paid about 80 Euros per night for a double room with breakfast, which was fantastic !!

For the second post about our trip, go here :-

Have a good time !!

Stay in Old Town area.

|||

Ditto, Seasmoke and comments regarding Betlem Club.

A1 position IMO, close to all but quiet. Anyone looking for a 3* option, this is a really good choice.

P.S. I think most will find Wenceslas Sq a huge disappointment, no need to stay near there whatsoever.

Totally agree about Wenceslas Square - it%26#39;s ok to visit and maybe shop, but it%26#39;s definitely not a place to call home for a tourist visiting Prague for a few days.

Planning trip in 2 weeks - some advice please

Hello

I am trying to plan a visit to Prague for my partner%26#39;s 40th birthday. I have read numerous posts on here and looked at all the reviews and I%26#39;m still stuck!

Have decided that given our short stay (2 nights) we need to be central, but I would prefer quiet-ish so decided on Mala Strana side. With budget constraints I now have a hotel choice of either the Hotel William or Archibald at the Charles Bridge - any advice/suggestions about these two, or a similar alternative?

My second question is re: ATMs. I have read all the advice about taking out cash via ATMs instead of exchanging in advance - can anyone tell me if the cash machines accept cards with the Cirrus logo, and are the instructions on screen easy to understand?

Finally does anyone have any advice about booking hotels - either through booking agents e.g. Hotels.com, Last Minute etc., or direct with the hotel? Usually I would book with the hotel, in this case it looks like I might get a better deal with an agent - does anyone know which ones are better - I%26#39;ve read a few horror stories about overbooking!!

Sorry for such a long post, but thought it was easier to do it all in one go! Mind you I%26#39;ll probably think of several more questions now! However, I won%26#39;t ask about transport from the airport - already decided to book shuttle with prague-airport-shuttle.com thanks to earlier posts on the forum.

Thanks for reading :)

Sara

Hello haflinger

Good choice regarding the airport transfer, a very reliable service.

Your debit card will be OK to use, all ATMs that I%26#39;ve seen have English instructions, so very easy to navigate. There are about 3 or 4 ATMs in the arrivals hall at the airport and all over the town.

As regards the hotels, I have not stayed in any of those mentioned, however, only very recently we had a very good report on Archibald. Another hotel in Mala Strana which has been recommended a number of times is the Golden Well, perhaps you%26#39;d like to have a look at some of the reviews.

I don%26#39;t use agents for my bookings, but Hotel.com, Expedia are fine. Also yeego has been recommended

previously. Just compare the sites.

http://www.yeego.com/

Good hunting. Penny

|||

Thanks Penny,

It%26#39;s a relief to know that there are English instructions on the ATMs. I sure the recent review on the Archibald, which has made it my current first choice, but I%26#39;ll have a look at the Golden Well too. Must make my mind up soon - we%26#39;re going on the 18th!

Thanks again, Sara

|||

%26quot;I sure%26quot;??? Should have said %26quot;I saw%26quot; - doh!

|||

Golden Well looks lovely, but unfortunately out of my price range :( Thanks for the suggestion though.

|||

hi when i am there i always use this hotel.

heres the link.http://www.pragueexpreshotel.cz/index.php?lang=en%26amp;section=1

i have to warn it has a sex shop across the street and strip bar near it.

but it is very central and great value for money.

philip

|||

Archibald at the Charles Bridge for sure, the William certainly is fine but Archibald at the Charles Bridge is in a great location!

|||

Hi

Your were asking about cirrus card at atm in prague airport and i was on airport shuttle website and their machines accept this card. just click on %26#39;prague airport info%26#39; at top and then on highlighted atm it mentions it there. Hope this helps have a good trip and thanks for airport shuttle tip. we%26#39;re going to Prague in 2 weeks this was very helpful

sue

|||

Thanks all,

Pivo - that was what we thought about the Archibald,so it was great to have it confirmed by a local, and as they say %26#39;location, location, location%26#39;, so have decided to book it:)

Sue - thanks for the cirrus info. We go in two weeks (on the 18th), perhaps we%26#39;ll be there at the same time?

While I%26#39;m here - has anyone eaten at the Archibald at Charles Bridge restaurant - is it any good?

Staropramen Brewery tour

Hi there, Me and the wife will be going to stay at the Andels hotel for a long weekend for valentines,and I see that the Staropramen brewery is only around the corner. I looked on the website but cant see if it is open this time of year or its opening times. Any help would be gratefully recieved.

P.s Have read the threads on the Bud and Pilsner U trips but i dont think she will wear it not with the travelling etc involved

|||

I looked into the trip myself and the reviews i found were not great. I%26#39;ll be heading down to the Pilsner myself. But is open as far as i know. Maybe you can get the wife to go with you to Pilsen too. There are lots of other things to do and see there. Tread carefully lol!

|||

…pivovarystaropramen.cz/eng/kontakty.html#

Looks like you need to reserve the tour.But I believe that Prague pivo expert pivero does not recomment this trip.

To get more info search for Staroprament Brewery Tour in the above box.

|||

sorry, should have said Prague beer (pivo) expert....pivero..

|||

I did the Staropramen tour about 6 years ago,but believe it has recently changed ( it is very Industrial).If you do a search on the TA site for info on the tour it may be there.

can i suggest a couple or three micro breweries to visit in the city.

http://www.umedvidku.cz/

great food in here too ,their own beer Oldgott is very good also.It has a great shop as well.

http://www.klasterni-pivovar.cz/en/

I like the beer in this place and the food is very good too,not the cheapest place though.

http://www.npivovar.cz/en/index.php

The Newtown brewery is a good place and the beer excellent,but i was very dissapointed with the food last time I was in.It does cater for larger groups and maybe the food reflects this.

there are sevral other places and you can see them all on this list.

http://www.classiccitybrew.com/prague.html

|||

Thanks everybody,

|||

Four of us did the Staropramen tour in Oct 2007. At that time you had to reserve the tour via email. We thought the tour rather bogus and nothing to write home about, and would not do it again. They also hustle you out the door shortly after the conclusion of the tour. (One can only assume they don%26#39;t want you to drink too much of the free beer) In short, take the advice of the Prague experts and go somewhere else for your tour(s)

tptr

|||

I%26#39;ve said it here many times. A much better alternative to the Staroprmaen tour is Ferdinand, in Benešov. A much nicer brewery, that still uses open fermenters and makes MUCH better beers than the Smíchov monster.

It is really easy to get to Benešov, there are regular trains and buses from Prague that will take you there in less than one hour. There are guided visits, but I don%26#39;t know how it works, the website is http://www.pivovarferdinand.cz/an/english.htm

And if you need something to convince the missus, then you can show her this page http://www.zamek-konopiste.cz/en/ Konopiště is one of the most beautiful castles here. Unfortunately, there aren%26#39;t any guided tours during winter, but I think the gardens are open, though you may want to check that one out.

Na Zdraví!

Information for mum

My mum is planning a trip to Prague by herself in November. She is a little concerned and I am hoping someone can give me information I can pass on.

Firstly, if she arrives by train and stays at the Chopin Hotel (formerly Holiday Inn Express) directly across from the station how easy and safe will it be for her to walk from the station to the hotel at 8pm by herself.

Secondly, can anyone tell me how much a train from Budapest to Prague would cost one way either first class or second class. Also is there a huge difference on either class (I believe that the EC trains are not that different).

Thanks to anyone that will help me out with her questions.

|||

I%26#39;m not sure how much it is from Budapest to Prague - the other way is 19 Euros so it shouldn%26#39;t be that different. You might want to ask in the Hungary forum for that information.

1st v. 2nd - It doesn%26#39;t really matter as the difference is minimal - you just get more space in 1st and it is a lot cheaper.

Some idea of what it looks like inside:

2nd class: www.vagonweb.cz/fotogalerie/H/MAV_Bmz.php

1st class: www.vagonweb.cz/fotogalerie/CZ/CD_Ampz.php

Safety is not really an issue - although the Hotel Chopin is opposite the main railway station, the Budapest train arrives at Holešovice station, which is 3 stops down the red metro line (line C - she should get a train going in the direction of %26#39;Háje%26#39;,and should get off at %26#39;Hlavní nádraží%26#39;. Just make sure that she gets a ticket and validates it!

Hope this helps!

|||

Obviously I should have said %26#39;2nd is a lot cheaper%26#39; :)

|||

Thanks for that information but I think that the train goes into the main station. I have looked on the timetable and there is a train

EC 272 leaving on the 2 Nov at 13.28 and gets into Praha hl.n. at 20.31. Is this the main station or is it a different station?

|||

That%26#39;s the one! Sorry - I assumed they all went to Holesovice, so your mum has nothing to worry about :)
