Ideas for less conventional day trips out of Prague

Hello all--

My wife and I are looking for a nice day trip outside of Prague that would not involve large groups of tourists in September/October. While I love castles, my wife is not as much of a fan--so that takes a couple of places off the list, I think. She has already told me that she doesn%26#39;t want to go to Terezin (and I%26#39;ve already been, but would go again). She is essentially looking for a town where we can hang out, visit some local shops, chill out at a cafe, and observe some life outside of the capital. It sounds good to me, but I didn%26#39;t have any superb ideas to suggest. Sightseeing would be fine, but not necessary if the town is appealing in and of itself. Could you suggest some ideas?

Thanks!

Telč is a nice place to visit, small but historic. Depending on how you travel it may be more than a day trip. Oloumouc, Brno are some other suggestions.

....

Žatec for the beer festival in SEPT.

Znojmo has one of the best festivals also in SEPT-the burčák festival (early wine)

....

plenty of folk festivals on hand each fall...small or large

.....

Anyplace in Southern Moravia in the fall as it is harvest season.

...

city of Rožnov has a living museum, music, food, crafts ..all things Czech

Karlovy Vary are doable on a day trip, but would not call it unconventional. Still, a good day out. You%26#39;ll find plenty about Karlovy Vary on the web.

What about Liberec? It%26#39;s regional capital in North Bohemia, about 100 from Prague.

There aren%26#39;t many big tourist-attractive historic monuments, but it has some historical buildings in the center and they say also that there is a %26quot;19th century atmosphere cafe%26quot; on the main square.

czech.cz/en/…

The city is attractive for mainly domestic visitors because of famous zoological garden, botanical garden and especially for having big aquapark.

There aren%26#39;t many information on the english version on their sites, only links to important places:

Czech version - for seeing some photos:

liberec.cz/pages/…pamatky.htm

You can also visit Ještěd - the biggest mountain (1012 metres) in the Jizerské hory mountains. There is a tower from 1973 on the top with hotel and restaurant inside. You can use the funicular to get there.

I was searching travel possibilities - by train you must transfer at Turnov - it can be a nice trip to stay there a while and see the town - %26quot;hearth of Bohemian Paradise%26quot;.

…turnov.cz/…basic-information.html

Two hours by train to Turnov, then visit the town, then go to Liberec (45 min). The disadvantage is that the station in Turnov is 2 km out of the center - you can wait for some local train to a closest station %26quot;Turnov-město%26quot;, but it seems too complicated when you want to go to Liberec also.

So there is a better option for you - taking bus - about 1h ride from the end of metro line B (Černý most). It goes approx. every hour and is provided by Studentagency company - so newer buses with beverages, magazines and stewards on the board etc. Price is approx. 100,- CZK per person - so maybe a bit less than the train and more convenient.

Thank you all for your responses! You have given me some great ideas! I%26#39;ll let you know what we choose to do.

Děkujeme!
