Wien to Praha via Brno

I plan to make a stop in Brno on central European tour Budapest-Wien-Praha in the summer, but I am undecided as to how long I will need in the South Moravian city.

Does Brno warrant an overnight stay or is it doable in an afternoon if I take a morning train from Wien and then continue to Praha in the evening?

Also, does a ticket valid between Wien and Praha permit a stop in Brno or will I be forced to purchase two separate tickets?

It is definitely not do-able in an afternoon - if you do that you will come away disappointed, I can guarantee it, and you would miss out on a lot. You need at least a few days ideally, especially in the summer, as there is a huge range of things to do and see in the surroundings and the city itself - there are usually street festivals in the centre, folk festivals in the surrounding villages, and the wine harvest festivals later in the summer. Also boating on the lake to the north of the city, the caves in Blansko, not to mention places like Mikulov/Lednice and Valtice to the south. And that%26#39;s without even seeing the city, its churches, castles and great pubs - http://www.brno.cz/index.php?lan=en and the links on the left. You need a few years to appreciate the place :)

It is great in the summer - you can either just hang out in a street cafe on náměstí Svobody and watch the world go by or go and sunbathe by the aforementioned lake - the options are endless.

To be perfectly honest, I have never tried %26#39;stopping off%26#39; like you suggest - I always either go to or from Brno. I don%26#39;t know how they would be able to tell, but to be safe I would get two tickets.

Enjoy!

If we%26#39;re talking stricly about the city of Brno (and not touring half of Southern Moravia as GCEK suggests) then it is definitely doable in a day and if I were you I%26#39;d hit the road for Prague in the evening.

Do so by all means but if you did so you would, as I say, be disappointed and you wouldn%26#39;t see very much. That goes for any city, though...
