Cesky Krumlov or Karlovy Vary and Prague

Spent Christmas 2008 in Prague, Karlovy Vary and Cesky Krumlov with my four teenagers.

Prague, Cesky Krumlov and Karly Vary are magnificent places. They are surely carved from the magic and brilliance of the God%26#39;s grand masters. When we were in Cesky Krumlov, I really thought The Seven Dwarfs were going to appear around any corner. The town is pristinely intact. No signs of modern life anywhere save a few road signs. I am sure the writers of many a fairytale have visited these places and is where they found inspiration for their stories.

And let me tell you about the hot chocolate. Sublime. I have never had anything like it. It was a cup of pure melted Belgium chocolate with home made whip cream. In Cesky, they have pots of it simmering on the streets. And the food---sweet heaven. Hearty, delectable, just plain yummy. Be sure to taste the homemade chips on from the street vendor in the square.

Learning the history of communism in Czech Republic was fascinating and had quite an impact on my kids. At the National Museum, we watched a film of Hitler and his army marching down the very street right outside the museum doors in front of us. We saw tanks rolling down the streets and recognized all the buildings from the city and on the street where our apartment was located.

We stayed at Levius Apartments in a fabulous 3 bedroom unit right next door to the Cafe Louvre in the heart of Prague, just minutes walk from all the best attractions. If fact, we did not take one taxi throughout the entire visit. The apartment was spotless, grand and decorated with style. It was well-equipped and well-appointed with all the latest technology such as two plasma screen TV%26#39;s, video game consoles and the a good movie collection to entertain us after 12 hours a day spent trekking around.

There have been many dicussions in this forum as to how to spend one valuable day outside of Prague. While Karlovy Vary was stunning, and although we did spend one night over in Cesky Krumlov, we would have easily invested three hours each way to see Cesky in a single day. There is no place to compare it with and it is not to be missed, especially at Christmas. Stop by the Dungeon Restaurant for a hearty open-hearth dinner and the Horror Bar for fun drinks, you will not be dissapointed.

We all have wonderful memories to tuck into our heart as we travel through the rest of our lives. I am grateful for a magical Christmas spent in the Czech Republic.
