Possible itinerary: Venice-Salzburg-Vienna-Prague

My wife and I are planning a 16-day trip in Europe this summer, starting in Venice and ending in Prague. Between Venice and Prague, we would like to rent a car and take a scenic ride through the Julian Alps in Slovenia, stay briefly at Lake Bled, and then travel through Austria with stays in Salzburg and Vienna. From Vienna, we intend to take a train to Prague.

We developed a preliminary and very flexible itinerary, but we are concerned it may be too agressive because our trip is only 16 days, 2 of which are for travelling to and from the US. We also are not sure of the best way to travel from city to city, particulary in Austria. We like the freedom of our own car, but we do not want to spend too much time in the car or incur the reportedly high international drop off charges for returning the car in a different country.

Our preliminary itineray is as follows: (1) fly into Venice and stay for 3-4 days; (2) from Venice, take the train to Villach, Austria, rent a car, and drive to Bled, Slovenia for a 2-night stay at Lake Bled. While in Slovenia, take a scenic ride through the Juilian Alps and possibly visit Bovec and/or Kobarid; (3) from Lake Bled, drive to Salzburg (through Villach) with a 2-3 night stay in Salzburg; (4) from Salzburg, drive to Vienna with a stops in Hallstat, Bad Ischl, and Krems. Stay in Vienna for 3-4 days and drop off the rental car; (5) from Vienna, take the train to Prague for a 3-4 day stay. Return to US.

We would greatly appreciate receiving any suggestions or comments on our proposed itinerary. Again, we are very flexible and can easily change places, lengths of stays, modes of transportation, etc. If it%26#39;s better to do so, we can also reverse the order of the trip by starting in Prague and ending in Venice. My wife and I just want to have fun, enjoy each other%26#39;s company, and see the world together, one trip at a time. Thank you.

Your itinerary sounds ok. However:

First check with the Austrian rental company what their policy is for bringing their cars into Slovenia - they may not allow you to do so, or they may add a large supplement.

You will also have to pay for a 35 Euro highway sticker for Slovenia www.lloyds.com/dj/DowJonesArticle.aspx… which is a bit controversial. Again, check that your hire car has an Austrian highway sticker as well.

Public transport in Austria is very good, fast and reaches everywhere that you might want to see. I expect you have posted this in the Austrian/Slovenian forums as well, so they will advise you more on those sections of your itinerary

It is best that you know the %26#39;ins and outs%26#39; before you go :)
