Where would you go from Krakow with 4 days?

I will be leaving Krakow with my final destination Prague. I do not want to go through Katowice. I could go Olomouc or Brno and then Cesky Krumlov and then Prague which is where my flight departs. I also wanted to break the trip up between Krakow and Prague. Where would you go? I do want to spend at least one night in Cesky Krumlov.

Thanks

You won%26#39;t have time for everything so something has got to give, possiby Český Krumlov, as if you do an overnight stay you will have no time to see Prague.

Unfortunately Brno is a bit out of your way, but Olomouc is possible if you want to fit that in as well - leave Krakow at 0653, arrive Olomouc 1105. Get a tram into the centre and have a look around, making sure you see the plague column and the communist astrological clock.

From Olomouc to Prague there are loads of trains -just take you pick, and it costs 310 Crowns. It takes about 2 hours 45 minutes - 3 hours (a couple take over 5 hours - avoid them).

Times can be found here: www.idos.cz

If you want to see something like Česky Krumlov, but much nearer (also a UNESCO world heritage site), then go to Kutná Hora (1 hour by train), but by all means go to CK if you want to have less time in Prague - that is entirely up to you! The bus (Student Agency) is the best way of getting there - look it up in the search box; there is loads of information on this on this forum.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the informaton. I do plan on staying in Prague for one week and have a room booked. Its the four days I have before my reservation in Prague. Is Olomouc worth an overnight? I have heard mixed views on Brno. Is there another place that shouldn%26#39;t be missed?

Thanks for your help.

I would definitely agree with Cesky Krumlov and Olomouc. They are both very interesting and CK is especially charming. I would personally not go to Brno - it%26#39;s not bad or anything but just not a %26quot;must see%26quot; in my opinion. Olomouc is worth one night.

Are you interested in castles? There are some interesting ones south of Prague. Perhaps on your way to Prague you could go to Kutna Hora and the bone church at Sedlec. That is worth half a day. I would definitely choose KH over Brno.

In my opinion Brno is definitely a %26#39;must see%26#39;, but you need more time - it has a very special atmosphere and one day is not nearly enough to capture it. Many people just go for an afternoon on the way between Vienna and Prague and of course they are disappointed - those who stay inevitably enjoy it more; that is why you may have heard %26#39;mixed reviews%26#39; - I personally cannot understand why people might not like it as it is a beautiful, laid-back place, which is much cheaper than Prague and Vienna (to which is is very similar, but more %26#39;medieval%26#39;, but with the old-fashioned values that have disappeared in the large tourist centres.

So save it for another time, preferably summer, and explore the delights not only of the city, but also of southern Moravia, its vineyards, caves and folklore.

I don%26#39;t mind Brno - I%26#39;ve stayed there lots but for this trip I would personally cut it out. If I had to choose between Olomouc and Brno I would choose Olomouc but that%26#39;s just me! :-)

Absolutely - in this itinerary a trip to Brno would definitely not be worth it. In fact even Český Krumlov might be pushing it :)

Olomouc is beautiful, and it is on your way.

Does this sound crazy.. I didn%26#39;t even know about Kutna Hora until someone mentioned it here. It sounds like a charming town with an interesting bone church nearby. My options:

Krakow to Olomouc (Sunday) trip time 4 hrs. (1 Night)

Olomouc to Bratslava (Monday)Things closed? 2 hrs. 41 min. (1 night)

Bratslava to Kutna Hora (Tues.) trip time 4 hrs. (1 night)

With the above I could spend an extra night in one of the places for a total of 4 nights. Final destination Prague for 1 week (hotel pre-booked).

or

Krakow - Olomouc 2 nights (trip time 2:41)

Olomouc- Cesky Krumlov 1 night (trip time 7 hrs)

Cesky Krumlov-Kutna Hora 1 night (trip time 5 hrs)

I guess will I be really missing something if I don%26#39;t go to Cesky Krumlov?

What would you do???

I%26#39;m not even sure of the transportation cost factor yet.

Thanks Everyone!

You%26#39;re getting complicated now!

I would leave out Bratislava - Brno would be preferable as there is a lot more to see and do there. Or, as I said, leave out Brno and go straight to Prague and go to Cesky Krumlov from there for a night (you will have to go through Prague anyway for the bus)

Your second itinerary is IMO totally unworkable as you would be spending most of your time in trains and buses, and you will not have a relaxing time.

Costs - Krakow - Olomouc 22 Euros (or equivalent in zloty)

Olomouc - Prague - 310 Crowns (c. 11 Euros)

Prague - Cesky Krumlov - 300 Crowns return (Student Agency bus - don%26#39;t get the train)

Trains and other transport are very reasonably priced in the Czech Republic - all tickets can be bought on the day of departure, no reservation necessary. For purchasing the bus tickets on-line, do a search on %26#39;student agency cesky krumlov%26#39; on this forum and there is loads of information.

Thanks for the prices! Could Cesky Krumlov be done as a day trip from Prague or should it really be an overnight to appreciate it? What about the town Kutna Hora? Would this be better as an overnight to appreciate it?

You have been a lot of help as I%26#39;m trying to figure this out.

Definitely spend a night in Český Krumlov - many people do it as a day trip, but it is quite a long journey and it is much nicer at night when it is all lit up. When are you intending on going? You should note that the castle is only open from April to October, but it is a beautiful place all the same.

I am not one for saying that anywhere can be seen in a day :) but you can get a lot done in Kutná Hora in a day trip. It is quite small and you will need a good guide book to explain the meaning behind things like the murals in the cathedral and why the ossuary in Sedlec (the %26#39;Bone Church%26#39;) is as it is. It is absolutely fascinating.

It takes about an hour from the main station - get the 0956, which arrives in Kutná Hora at 1059, cost 97 Crowns (€3.50), or 146 Crowns first class (c.€5.20)

Back again they go every 2 hours, at 1459, 1659, etc, and the journey is a little more than an hour. Don%26#39;t get the 1359 (which would be a bit early, anyway), as it takes twice as long and costs more.

Enjoy!
