Visiting first week of February - 3 Nights with GF - Help!

Hi im booked up to go next month in February, and need to know your thoughts on here about this city ...i took advantage of the Hilton 50% offer!

Im aware the currency is Korona (spelling?) and seems to be 30k to the £ which isnt too bad

luckily it isnt in the Euro ....yet

i think an exchange bureau will give me 28k to the pound..which is quie good.

im staying in Hilton Old Town, how close is this to the places you recommend? please note i booked this hotel through a cheap deal (very chea in fact), im not posh at all!

i knowa few palces to go...sightseeing etc.

but need cheap but good dining places

and cafes (daytime use)

we are going for 3 nights over the weekend, so plan to make the most of it.

not used a transport system before..best method to use from the airport to the hotel and back?? and cheapest?

a day pass would be perfect, any tips

we dont wish to be ripped off..so if i can book in advance or know where to book from that will be great

Your hotel is about 300 m from Municipal House and Powder Tower and about 800 m from Old Town Square.

The nearest stops are Náměstí Republiky (metro station - line B (yellow), trams 5, 8, 14, bus 133) and Masarykovo nádraží (railway station, trams 3, 5, 14, 24, 26).

The closest surrounding of Masarykovo nádraží isn%26#39;t very nice (there is a few of strange people screwing around), but it isn%26#39;t dangerous to go there - I just wanted to say that it isn%26#39;t a place you should get off the tram when visiting Prague first time.

I think the simplest connection between airport and your hotel is this: Take the bus number 100 at the airport and go to it%26#39;s terminal station Zličín. From Zličín go by metro (it%26#39;s line B, Zličín is terminal station) to Náměstí Republiky. Whole ride is about 40 minutes, (15-18 min bus and 23 min metro - 13 stations), the bus goes every 5 to 15 minutes, the metro every 3 minutes. The hotel is about 200 m away from the station.

At night the shedules are different, but I suppose you%26#39;ll arive during the day.

Information about timetables - Prague Public Transport - in English http://194.213.60.4/IDOS/ConnForm.aspx?tt=pid%26amp;cl=E5

Using public transport is the cheapest option - ticket for the way from airport to hotel costs CZK 26,- (+ big luggage another ticket for CZK 13,-) per person. The 1-day ticket (24 hour) costs CZK 100,- and the 3-day 330,- (if you go with children it%26#39;s worh of that +30,- CZK - it%26#39;s valid for 1 adult + 1 child 6-15 years old).

Official sites of Prague Public Transport company (DPP) - info about prices http://www.dpp.cz/en/fares-in-prague/

You can buy your ticket in DPP info centres in Terminal 1 or 2 daily from 7.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. or in the vending mashines in front of the hall. http://www.dpp.cz/en/ticket-sales/

You can call the DPP (free in CR) 800 19 18 17 daily from 7.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.

Remember you must validate your ticket(s) in the yelow box in the bus!

And the right spelling of our currency is %26quot;koruna%26quot;, the whole name is exactly %26quot;koruna česká%26quot; (Czech crown), abbrev. %26quot;Kč%26quot;. How the money looks like you can see here (off. sites of Czech National Bank) www.cnb.cz/en/banknotes_coins/banknotes/

|||

The timetables - better link (the same adress as before) http://www.dpp.cz/idos and then click on the English flag at the top of the page.

|||

Hello Acidhols, the cheapest way to your hotel is by public transport, all the relevant information is posted above.

Another a very good option would be bus 119 from the airport to Dejvicka (terminal station) and tram number 8 which will get you to Namesti Republiky (your hotel nearest stop) - it is about 8 stops, you will get off on the second stop as you pass the river Vltava.

More expensive but very convenient is cedaz minibus

cedaz.cz/…

This costss 120Kc each ( £4) and drops you off directly by the Old Hilton.

A resonably good and relatively inexpensive dining place is in Hybernska (Hybernska Restaurace),a street running parallel to V Celnici, and you get there in about 1 minute going through the passage opposite your hotel, next to Marriott.

|||

Well - 30 to the £ isn%26#39;t THAT great :) I have been here for 17 years on/off and it used to be steady around 56 - even last year it was around 42-ish ...

Use the advice on this forum and get your money from the cashpoint - you won%26#39;t get a better exchange rate. Today%26#39;s exchange rate is c. 30.5, so anyone offering you 28 is on the make.

Hilton Old Town is v. near the centre. All the information you request has been covered extensively on this forum - places to eat, bus/taxi from airport, etc. Use the search box and you will find what you need!

|||

Hi

i think we will get the Cedz, at £8 for a one off journey from the airport to the hotel and back as well

its not too bad..

i thought Hilton Old Town was a coveneinet located location..did i presume wrong?

any others stayed here before?

any really local..especially areas such as those highly rated on tripadvisor?

|||

http://chimao.notlong.com - Hilton Old Town is central - red 1 is your location

|||

Acidhols

I do not think that is the door to door service for £8 it is this one quoted on their site.

%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;Regular shuttle bus transport between Prague - Ruzyně Airport and city centre (%26quot;V Celnici%26quot; street, in front of CSA terminal, 50 m from Republic Square - náměstí Republiky, close to hotels Hilton Prague Old Town and Marriott) (map). Daily every 30 minutes: %26quot;V Celnici%26quot; street - airport: 5:30 am - 9:30 pm. Airport - %26quot;V Celnici%26quot; street: 6:00 am - 9:00 pm.%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

If you want door to door best to order online you do get a reduced price for a return journey.

TORII

|||

Re: %26quot;i thought Hilton Old Town was a coveneinet located location..did i presume wrong?%26quot;

What made you think that? It very close to everything in the centre! :)

|||

I think this is a tiny bit of misunderstanding - £8 or 240Kc is for two people - and the bus stops at V Celnici next to the Old Town Hilton.

|||

thanks for responses, its cheaper for a bus to stop nearer the hotel i found through cedaz

anymore advice?

Paging Pivini Fiosof

Hello. My husband and I are coming to Prague in a few weeks. We have never been to Prague, but he lived for a few years in Germany/Switzerland. He LOVES Weissbier. We are staying in the Old Town area, can you recommend any authentic brewpub for a GREAT beer at a good price? Also, is there any interesting tours of breweries that are around that vicinity? Thank you so much!

|||

until pivero comes back, you can peruse his blog to get some ideas.

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g274707-i96-k249…

|||

I am certainly not trying to steal away with Pivero%26#39;s thunder, but the %26quot;Weißbier%26quot; in your post caught my attention. That is also my favorite brew (and my wife%26#39;s favorite too!) and the pub Pivovar u Bulovky brewes up maybe the best tasting Weißbier we have ever tasted. But, it%26#39;s a bit hard to find being a bit removed from the Old Town tourist area. Check my previous post of 27 January. I did make a mistake on the name of the pub, it%26#39;s Pivovar u Bulovky but the directions should help you somewhat. Pivero has a link in his blog that has more info on the pub that I wished I had seen before our last trip. Hope you make it there, it%26#39;s a great place!

Steve

|||

Any suggestions are much appreciated. I realize the Old Town area is %26quot;touristy%26quot; and we love more geniune experiences. Keep em coming! Thank You!

|||

Here I am!

There are several options for weissbier in Prague. Primátor has a very decent one (the only industrial wheat beer at the moment), it%26#39;s on tap at quite a few places in Prague, but right now I can%26#39;t think of any one in the centre. The most tourist friendly I can remember are U Sadu (…blogspot.com/2008/02/u-sadu.html) or Pivovarský Klub (http://gastroinfo.cz/pivoklub).

The above mentioned Richter has a very nice Weizen as well, it is far from the centre, but not difficult to get there, trams 10 and 24 will take you directly, you will have to get off at the stop Bulovka and then walk a bit (…blogspot.com/2008/…richter-brewery-pub.html)

The closest to the centre, and one with a really good wheat beer is Pivovarský Dum (http://gastroinfo.cz/pivodum)

About brewery tours, well, you can go to Staropramen, but why bother? Better would be to go to Pivovar Benešov, they brew Ferdinand, they still use open fermenters, so it will be a more interesting visit (not to mention that their beers are FAR, FAR superior to those from Smíchov). The town isn%26#39;t far from Prague and it is very easily reached by regular trains or buses. On top of that, you could also visit Konopiště Castle (though I%26#39;m not 100% sure it is opean, or what is open).

As for brewpubs, you can have a look at my blog, I%26#39;ve reviewed several of them, not only in Prague …blogspot.com/search/label/Brewpubs

Na Zdraví!

Prague Cider

Hey!

I am off to Prague for a week at the end of March, it%26#39;s not really a big drinking trip but we would like to hit the pubs and clubs at night. The only problem is two of the guys in my party are big cider drinkers. Is there any pubs people can recomend that do either cider on tap or bottled?

As for me I%26#39;ll be on the Czech Lager so i wont have to worry! :P

|||

Yes, there are. Usually pseodu Irish or English pubs, but if I was you, I would stay well away from most of them, beer is usually overpriced and rubbish and you will be likely to run into a stag group. Besides, the cider you will find is no big deal, Strongbow and the likes.

St matthews fare

Hi

We will be in Prague from the 23 to 26 of this month and just read the article in the Guardian where they mention St Matthews fare.Can anyone tell me what it is and where in the city it`s held?Suitable for small children?Thanks

|||

|||

Hi PennyLaneSussex,

thanks for the link.Think it will have to be a toss up between the fare or the zoo:)

|||

The dates in the link are last year%26#39;s, so most probably the fair will open on 22nd February. Good luck with your choices.

Flights - where to get the best deal?

I am trying to book flights from any London airport to Prague for the first weekend in March and I am finding the prices to be really high! Are there any particular airlines that I should be trying?

Thanks very much.

Emma

|||

Czech Airlines prices from Heathrow to Prague are curently £104 return (going Thursday 6th leaving Monday 9th March) Is this expensive?

|||

Emma,

What about easyjet?

If you go on the Prague airport site, there is a list of all airlines flying in and out.

Martha

|||

Easyjet flies from Stanstead or Gatwick (convenient to Kent). I think you%26#39;ll find that their flights for the same dates are more expensive than CSA. Had it not been so, I would have advised.

|||

Great search engine that will give you all the airlines www.skyscanner.net

|||

Same advice as above. For the dates as given above CSA is the cheapest

|||

Penny

Using your dates the EasyJet price could be as low as 82 pounds (depending on times of course) or as high as 100 pounds.

Martha

|||

Emma,

I was just reading in the Prague Post that Hungary%26#39;s WizzAir will begin flying Lutton to Prague. They fly Mon, Wed, Fri %26amp; Sun. The pricing for Fri March 6th-Mon March 9th is 50 Pounds.

Looks like you do have a few choices out there depending on what days you want to fly.

Martha

|||

You are right, Martha, if you are flexible and play with the dates you can get a very good deal. For the OP, living in Kent, Gatwick is probably the best airport, Luton not so great. Sometimes what you save on the ticket, you will use up in time, petrol and parking. It%26#39;s up to them to decide.

|||

Penney,

Emma did say any London airport and only gave the first weekend so the date parameters were not specific.

I hope she will find there are options available to her depending on her choice of day and time and airport.

Martha

|||

I%26#39;d snap up that CSA ticket if you haven%26#39;t already.

BTW nobody would really count Luton as %26#39;London%26#39;, unless you use Ryanair or Sky Europe%26#39;s criteria (i.e. Bratislava=Vienna/Frankfurt=Hahn, etc :) )

Then again, %26#39;London%26#39; Gatwick is a bit misleading as well...

Aparthotel City 5 or Residence Belehradska 35

Hello,

We are looking at staying at either the Aparthotel City 5 or the Residence Belehradska 35.

Which apartment is the closest to the city centre and tourist spots - we are only in Prague for 3 days so want to be as central as possible.

Thanks,

Megan

|||

Neither properties are central, but they are both on good transport links to the centre. Aparthotel is situated near the metro stop Andel which will get you to the centre in 5 - 10 minutes. Residence Belehradska is on a tram stop and again, to get to the centre max 15 minutes.

|||

Thanks, do you know of any hotels or apartments closer to the city centre that are around the 100Euro or less?

Otherwise do you think it is easy enough to catch the tram/train from these apartments?

|||

pragueexperience.com/accommodation/apartment…

have a look at this website for apartments suggestions.

As regards the public transport, it is very good and frequent, nothing to worry about.

metro at night

off to prague soon. Have always used the bus and metro to get into the city centre but this time we are arriving at 10.30 local time. Is it still safe at this time of night or should we get a taxi?

|||

Yes%26#39;ll it%26#39;ll still be fairly busy and I really don%26#39;t think you will have anything to worry about. I took nightbus 510 at 0100 last Friday night / Saturday morning and it was not a problem.

|||

It is perfectly safe, but the metro runs only till midnight, so you must not dawdle. Personally, I would take a taxi or prebook a shuttle. (but again, I would do this any time of the day :))

prague-vienna-budapest by car?

Has anybody rened a car in Prague and raveled o Budapest via Vienna? Pleasr share your experience. We are planning to go there in may for 10 days.thnaks

|||

I%26#39;ve done the trip a couple of times, but in my own car, not rented one.

I think you%26#39;d find it very expensive, if at all possible, to drop off your rental in another country.

So probably not a good choice. You could easily to this trip by train Prague - Vienna - Budapest.

|||

It is a lot easier, more relaxing and cheaper by train IMO - as above, remember that you have got to get back again to return the car, and when you are in Vienna or Budapest you won%26#39;t need the car anyway as a) the public transport is very good and b) parking is a nightmare and very expensive - the same goes for Prague, but you wouldn%26#39;t be using it much there anyway.

I%26#39;ve done it in my own car as well, but only one a one-day trip to all four capitals (including Bratislava) just to see if it could be done. I sometimes drive to Vienna, but I generally get the train nowadays.

Dress code at the state opera

I booked tickets to the opera and just wanted to ask if it is ok to wear jeans and a jumper, i.e. something casual? Or is it essential to dress up? We are only going for a few days and would prefer not to bring an extra outfit for just one night as we like to travel as light as possible.

|||

Smat as you like. Minimum smart casual. Avoid jeans and trainers.

|||

You might feel a bit out of place otherwise - most Czechs will wear a suit at the very least.

|||

Ive seen all sorts of people at the Opera, from the oens that go dressed like to a gala ball to people that come in jeans, the latter, tourists. Smart casual is fine if you don%26#39;t want to feel like a scruffy backpacker.

|||

jeans in Texas, understandble...jeans in an opera house in Europe-out of the question, IMO

|||

yeah, I wouldn%26#39;t go in jeans myself. Slacks or black trousers with a shirt and shoes minimum I would think.

Has anyone stayed at these apartments, or know about the apartments and their location?

Or other recomendations for a party of ofur for good location 2 bedroom apartments?

|||

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g274707-i96-k251…

Hello mrn - please have a look at this thread to get some ideas re apartments.

As regards Vlkova palace, Zizkov has never been my favourite location, but many would disagree. I don%26#39;t know anything about these apartments, but would be very wary of the reviews posted on TA. They look suspiciously untrue from one off postees and what looks like a travel agent.

K+K Hotel Central 100Euro Double Room in June

Is 100 Euro per night a good price for this particular hotel in June 2009?

|||

The hotel is in a good location, 5 minutes walk to the Old Town Square, next to Kempinski in Hybernska.

A very nice courtyard at the back of the hotel.

100 euros for a double room is very reasonable IMO, would even be better if it includes breakfast, but perhaps that would be too much to ask.

Yes, it includes breakfast.

Has anyone stayed at the AquaPalace Hotel in Prague?

I did not see any reviews on this hotel and wondered if anyone has stayed there. We are a family with 2 kids 7 %26amp; 8 and the water park next door to the hotel sounded like something we could bribe the kids with. I know the hotel is away from town but was unsure how big of a problem that would be.

Appreciate any feedback on this.

Thanks

|||

There are no reviews because it is a new hotel. Looks like is has not been added to the Trip Advisor choice of hotels as yet.

The website states that the hotel runs a free shuttle to the metro stop Opatov, you might want to ask the timetable of this service, how often it runs.

There are of course public buses which run from Cestice to Opatov, but not sure whether they run on the weekends.

I would guess that to get to the city centre would take about an hour by public transport.

So whether it is worth staying there would depend on how much time you want to spend in Prague. It might be better just doing the water park as a day trip.

|||

Yes a day trip is probably the right answer. I didn%26#39;t realize that it would be that far from town.

Thanks

|||

It is not far, about 12 miles from the city centre, and if you had a car, no time at all at the right time of th day. But with public transport, 20 minutes by bus, 20 minutes by metro and some waiting time....it probably adds up to an hour.

Hotels and Taxis and Attractions... just home!

Stayed in the Archibald Hotel at Charles Bridge. Wow!!! what a spot. Location Location Location. 1 minute walk from Charles Bridge, this hotel is ideally located between the old town, and the Prague castle area. It%26#39;s an ideal base to explore Prague on foot. The Na Kampa island that the hotel is on, is very quiet yet only minutes walk from the busy bridge and associated streets. Anyway enough about that. Highly recommend it. We got a great room on the top floor and overlooking the bridge. Wonderfully romantic. And we even got some snow on the 3rd day ;) I posted a review with some pics that should be up shortly.

Oh yeah, gotta tell you this guys, I had originally booked with http://milmark.cz/ this crowd. but the price increased on the website the day after I had booked? I emailed to check the price and was told it was a mistake and the prices would be changing back. I decided to cancel and book with someone else with a proven reputation, just in case. I booked with Prague Airport Shuttle after reading reviews on here. www.prague-airport-shuttle.com/index.htm and it has to be said, these guys are brilliant. Luckily I booked under my girlfriends name, because the milmark crowd were still there in the arrivals hall with my name even though I clearly advised them I was cancelling my order (3 weeks notice!!). They then also rang the hotel during my stay to advise they would pick me up?!?! Talk about hawking for business. I had to email them again and very clearly advise them I did not need their services thank you very much. Anyway, thanks to the guys at Prague Airport Shuttle. The drivers were very friendly, professional, and informative and added to the overall enjoyment of the trip. I would highly recommend them and will use them again on my next trip. Top marks.

Regarding Prague, if there%26#39;s one thing I recommend you should do, its go up the Old town hall on the old town square. That%26#39;s the clock tower that the astronomical clock is on. The entrance to the tower is through the adjacent tourist information office. Not very easy to find if you don%26#39;t know! 70 CZK gets you to the top. and there is not 500 steps up as you%26#39;d expect but a nice glass elevator! The views from the top are spectacular!! all the way form the TV tower to petrin hill, to the castle... beautiful!! I went up twice! :) :)

|||

Hello Mcgon - thanks for your report. Kampa is also my favourite part of Prague, specially during the winter time when it%26#39;s quiet and perhaps some snow on the ground. You might like to do a review of the Archibald hotel perhaps?

Also thanks for your comment on prague airport shuttle.com - they provide a very good reliable service and most of us are very happy to recommend them.

See you in Prague again? All the best, Penny

|||

review is now up Penny! ;) plus 3 photos of the area. The park in Kampa was nicely covered with snow on saturday morning.. beautiful walk along the river up the the most Legii bridge, then along Narodni up the junction with Wenscles square area. Yep the guys at the airport shuttle deserve all credit they get. Thanks for the pre-trip advice guys. Was delighted that the prices were still very reasonable after my 7 year gap since my last trip. beautiful spot. will surely return.

|||

Read it and marked appropriately! I passed the hotel a couple of months ago, no snow though, and went to a wedding reception in one of the restaurants just next door. It was lovely.

Thanks for the tip about the clock tower - have just added that on my list for my November trip

pocepice

thanks, correct spelling is pocepice were our forefathers are from.

chihak is there name

thanks again

joeclair

|||

That%26#39;s much better:) Pocepice is near Pribram, easy to get there from Prague by bus.

Its rather little settlement of just 500 people, try to write to their municipal office, I am sure they can assist you and arrange meetings, get you access to chronicles etc.

If you look in the telephone book http://www.zlatestranky.cz/?siteLanguage=en there is one Mr. Cihak who lives just down the road from Pocepice.

That is not to say that there aren%26#39;t any more - he just happens to have a phone...

|||

Hello, Joeclair

I saw your posting about Pocepice and the Chihak family. I have also been to Pocepice and my great grandmother was a Cihak/Chihak and family lived in the Cresco/Lourdes/Elma, Iowa area. Wondering if we%26#39;re cousins! Were you able to visit the inside of the church? It was locked while I was there and have been trying to find pictures of it.

Thanks!

Easy jet to Prague

Hi does anyone know where Easyjet fly into ? is it the main Prague airport ? Is there more than one airport anyway ? Am booked for June so just planning ahead.

Thanks

|||

Easyjet fly into Prague, where there is only one airport.

Additionally, Ryanair fly to Brno (about 200 miles to the south east) from Stansted.

|||

thank you for that info.

Best Hotel Location

My boyfriend and I will be traveling to Prague in May and wanted to know which section of the city is most ideal for accomodations that are within walking distance to restaurants and the major sites, including the jewish Qtr

We found a neat hotel, the Design Hotel Sax that got good reviews, but it looks very far from Wenenclas Square as well as old town, although it%26#39;s site claims it is only 30 minutes walk to the square.

The location of the Design Hotel Sax is near the Hdracany Castle. are their good restaurants nearby for us to walk to dinner?

We are looking for 4* properties and looking for a place that provides transportation services to/from both the airport and train station.

Look forward to any recommendations.

thanks

|||

I personally loved the U Tri Bubnu. It was nice, affordable, and centrally located. It is not a %26quot;romantic%26quot; hotel. It is just cozy and clean. It is near the clock. Stay away from the W Square and stay in the old town section instead. Trust me, it is a LOT nicer and really beautiful. You are also fine across from the bridge.

Last minute input please

Getting ready to book something later today for this weekend. Too many choices. Here%26#39;s what I have so far:

Grand Hotel Praha

Residence Retisova

Residence Karolina

Hotel Perla

Archibald at the Charles Bridge

I know they are all different, but I am looking for something convenient to sites, near good local places to eat and drink (not parties/clubs necessarily), but that also has some TV (looks like rainy ick weather this weekend) and definitely broadband Internet (so I can actually do some work (ugh) as well.

Thanks for your comments

|||

If I had a choice, my pick would be Grand Hotel Praha.

A Great Pub

We%26#39;re just back from Prague again last week and we stumbled uponst a keeper pub which we will be sure to visit on our next trip. The place is called Pivovarsky u Bulovky. It is in Prague 8 and definately off the beaten path but it is a wonderful little place. The food is quite good traditional Czech and very reasonable in price. The menu is only in Czech, no German or English, and the wait staff speaks only Czech so it is not your usual tourist pub. We were there last Tuesday evening and had reservations, which are a must as this little place does a land office business! The service is a might slow but that just gives you more time to drink the wonderful beer. They had four styles on tap and my favorite was the Bavarian weissbier which is as good as any weissbier I have tasted on our extensive travels throughout Bavaria. The owners name is Richter which probably speaks for itself. This pub is a bit difficult to find. It is on the 24 %26amp; 25 Tram line at the Bulovky stop. Just go downhill opposite the Fitness Solarium about 150 metres and it%26#39;s on your right.

Na Zdraví!!

|||

Good find! Just a slight correction of the name, though - Pivovar u Bulovky. I know it as a friend lives nearby. I think the website is kept only in Czech for a reason http://www.pivovarubulovky.cz/cz/jlistek.php (i.e. they probably want to keep it %26#39;local%26#39; :)) but as you found they certainly won%26#39;t turn you away.

I like their motto:

%26quot;Naše restaurace si klade za cíl pokračovat v tradici

vyhlášeného českého pohostinství starých dobrých

časů a působit jako lék pro hosty, znechucené českým

pohostinstvím časů novějších a méně dobrých%26quot;

which means something like:

%26quot;The aim of our restaurant is to continue in the famous tradition of Czech hospitality from the good old times and act as a medicine for our guests, who are disgusted by the Czech hospitality of today%26#39;s more modern and less good times%26quot;

Which says it all, really - they are probably kicking themselves that you found it and recommended it here :))

The menu is good and very good value and with home-produced beer at 29 Crowns you can%26#39;t go wrong. It just goes to show that a little exploring can pay off, and there are many more like that hidden away which still preserve the old atmosphere of Prague (even though this particular one is a newish establishment).

|||

It is one of my favourites. I go there quite often and i%26#39;ve seen a lot of beer geeks from other countries.

In a way, I really love the fact that neither staff nor menus speak English. It keeps it local and you will never see umbrella following herds taking much of the space. Franta Richter would never allow it.

Word on the street says that he is going to open another brewpub, a really big one, in Prague 11, another area far, far away from the tourist path. I%26#39;m already looking forward to it.

Na Zdraví!

|||

hmmm, maybe we can get TA to remove that post! ;-)

|||

not before I get a note of the address.:)

|||

%26lt;%26lt;another area far, far away from the tourist path. I%26#39;m already looking forward to it.%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

Is this really what a DE should be saying ?lol :o)

TORII

|||

You%26#39;ve been all reported, that%26#39;s all I can do :)

|||

Must say I dont think it will be non tourist for long with all this advertising!:o)

TORII

|||

I have to say that I didn%26#39;t think that %26quot;PUB%26quot; was particularly hidden from tourists - we visited last June when we were in Prague having a bit of a pub crawl - it was on my list of possibles, compiled by reading pivni filosof%26#39;s blog, and it%26#39;s also mentioned in the Good Beer Guide to Prague - which anyone interested in beer would surely get from the library before their visit. In fact we wondered if the acronym %26quot;PUB%26quot; was specifically aimed at attracting Brits!

Anyway, I agree that it is a totally smashing place although a little too smoky. We tried the Lezak 12 which was good (but not so good as the beer before - Svetla 10 at Pivovarska Krcma) and the excellent Weisbier 13.

Looking forward to hearing more about the new venture on this forum, if and when it materialises - waiting for the exchange rate to improve and then must come back to Prague again!

|||

It had never actually registered until now that the word %26#39;PUB%26#39; (abbreviation of Pivovar u Bulovky) was actually on any of their marketing material, but it is quite commonly used between young people as in %26#39;pujdeme do pabu%26#39; - %26#39;let%26#39;s go to the pub%26#39;.

Not to be confused with the %26#39;PUB%26#39;, though (details for which can be found if you click on the automatically-generated link) :)

|||

When we visited, the building itself was actually identified by a sign saying %26quot;PUB%26quot; - we were a bit apprehensive that we might be going into some sort of tourist trap specially devised for Brits Abroad. All was well though, most customers were locals and the atmosphere was empatically Czech. We did swap beer tales with some intrepid scottish souls though - they had their copy of the Good Beer Guide with them!

Galileo hotel

I%26#39;m booking this hotel,does anyone know how it is?

Pubs and restaurants near?

Thank you

Plzen pubs

Hi everybody,

Coming to Prague in 4 weeks and will be taking a day trip to Plzen to visit the Pilsner Urquell Brewery. After the tour we%26#39;ll be spending a few hours in Plzen before taking the train back to Prague. Can anybody recommend a couple of decent pubs to visit. Have already been told about Stara Sladovna which sounds great, anymore to add?

Thanks in advance

Places to Visit Near Brno

Hi - Me and my Husband are visiting BRNO next week for 4 days. Is there anywhere nearby (by train) that is worth a visit for a day trip.

Also I%26#39;m just about to start looking but I remember someone saying that there are some good microbreweries in Brno, does anyone have any details?

Thanks

|||

Hotel Pegas is the microbrewery you have probably heard of. Also there is the %26#39;big%26#39; Starobrno brewery which has a good restaurant and pub attached to it on Mendlovo náměstí.

You may not have time to see anything out of the city in four days as there is so much to see and do - http://www.brno.cz/index.php?lan=en (links on the left hand side), but you might want to go to the caves in Blansko www.moravskykras.net/en/moravian-karst.html which is easy to reach by train - c. 20 minutes to Blansko and then get the bus up to the caves (skalní mlýn). It%26#39;s a bit chilly up there at the moment, though, but the caves are open all year round. Also Mikulov - best to get the 9 am bus from the bus station (behind the shopping centre which is behind the rail station), and back again they go every 30 mins or so.

If you feel like a bit of nature you could go to the lake (přehada, locally known as %26#39;prígl%26#39;) - number 1 tram from the station, or 3 or 11 from Česká direction Bystrc and get off at %26#39;přístaviště%26#39; from where you take a short walk to the lake. It should be frozen enough for you to walk across it and it is beautiful. Some good little restaurants and pubs up there as well.

While you are in Brno go to the Spilberk castle, Tugendhat Villa, the cathedral, the Capuchin crypt and its mummified monks, and explore the many baroque churches. Just that should keep you busy for a couple of days.

Enjoy!

|||

Thanks ever so much, that is really really useful. The lake sounds great this time of year though I don%26#39;t think I will risk walking across it!

|||

If you see loads of kids playing ice hockey on it then it is safe :) I have walked, skated (not very well) and swum across that lake in my time so it has something for every season.

Here%26#39;s a little interactive transport map to take a look at http://www.brno.planydopravy.cz/

from prague to berlin

Hi everyone, i´m trying to get my schedule for the part of my euro trip that covers Prague to Berlin.

I get to prague on the 27th of may, I was thinking of doing 3 nights (4 days) in Prague, then trying to figure if I should head straight to Berlin (what is the cheapest way to do this ??) or make stop overs in either Krakow, Munich, Budapest or Vienna first ??

I leave Berlin on the 4th and head to Copenhagen (already have a flight ticket for that) so it has to give me at least a couple of days in Berlin. How many nights should I do in Berlin (does 4 nights sound about enough?)

Should I try to make it from Prague to Munich, Vienna, Budapest or Krakow and then Berlin or does it sound like too many train hours in a small time period ?? Does it make sense in money, or would it be to expensive to add a city to the Prague-Berlin route ??

thanks in advance....

|||

If you have only 4 days, you cannot possibly do the cities mentioned. They are not exactly on a route to Berlin.And you would spend most of your time on trains! If you want to stop somewhere between Prague and Berlin, perhaps Dresden would do it.

There are a number of daily trains between Prague and Berlin, not a very long trip, just over 4 hours (but have not checked) The cost of a ticket would be somewhere in the region of 30-40 euros.

|||

Thanks for you help !! Do you think Dresden is worth the stop, or should I maybe try a day trip to Hamburg while im in Berlin ??

My itinerary would look something like:

3 nights in Prague (27, 28, 29) should be enough, right ??

I´d leave for Dresden on the afternoon of the 30th, sleep there for one night,

Getting to Berlin on the 31st, staying there for four night 31st, 1, 2, 3 and leaving on the 4th to copenhagen !

Or something like:

3 nights in Prague(leaving for Berlin on the 30th)

5 night in berlin (30, 31, 1, 2, 3) and maybe doing one night in Hamburg ?

which one sounds better ??

thanks again !!

|||

I would stop in Dresden for 2 nights, and give Hamburg a definite miss. But perhaps you should post your question on the Dresden forum.

http://www.dresden.de/dmg/en/sights.php

|||

PS I%26#39;ve looked at your posting in Amsterdam - I think you are trying to fit too much into 3 days.

I would give Rotterdam a miss, as well as Luxembourg.

Stop in Brussels, have a day trip to Bruges and then take Thalys to Paris. No point taking Thalys from Amsterdam, it is too expensive, needs reservation and it is not any faster than ordinary IC train. (the fast track has not yet been finished)

|||

Thanx for the advice, Im gonna be taking a closer look at Dresden then to see whats in for me over there.

About Amsterdam, Brussels, Brugge, make so much more sense, but i´ve been told a couple of times that Brussels might not be worth it. Maybe I could just see Antwerp and Brugge and head directly to Paris, does that sound feasible ??

I know I´m being a little greedy on what I want to see in so little time, but I can only get a month off work and I wanna do so much !!

This is what my whole plan looks like, so that you can tell me if im overdoing it too much...

23rd of may I arrive at paris

27 I fly to Prague

30th (I´d be taking your advice) and would be heading to Dresden

1st of june I´d me moving along to Berlin

4th flight over to Copenhagen

8th flight to london

13th flight to amsterdam

17/18th night at antwerp/ brugge

19th I head back home to Argentina

Thanks again !!

|||

Sounds like a plan, a busy month, you%26#39;ll need a good holidays after that.

Just one comment, you cannot go to Paris directly from Brugges, you%26#39;d need to go via Brussels either on Thalys via Brussels or to catch Thalys in Brussels.

Good luck, Penny

Salsa Clubs in Prague

Hey,

I live Prague but have never been to any salsa clubs around...anyone has been to a cool club with latino music, mojitos and maybe also restaurant where there are salsa parties? Preferably in the center... I will have a guest who likes this music and wanna take him to a cool place...

Will be grateful for tips...;o)

Anna

|||

I knew someone who was a regular at Manes -- the art gallery also has a club. I think it was Friday%26#39;s but didn%26#39;t go myself.

You can look at these for more info (mostly in Czech):

www.salsaonline.cz

www.salsa-dance.cz

www.salsaweb.cz

This article is old, but has more detail on some:

praguenet.com/compass/number_5/nightlife.html

|||

This is what I used to check salsa possibilities in Prague,

www.salsapower.com

Unfortunately, I never went to any clubs on my visit.

|||

it isn%26#39;t a real salsa club but la bodeguita del medio on kaprova street has good latino music, mojitos and a good atmosphere

|||

Hi, Ann,

petty crime

I am worried after reading loads of stories about the prevalance of pickpockets in Prague...is it really such a major issue ? I hope not..I am street smart and well travelled but do not want to be paranoid while sightseeing.

|||

then don%26#39;t be ;-)

|||

Of course petty crime exists, as it does everywhere.

If you look like you are paranoid whilst sightseeing you will be %26#39;targeted%26#39;! The rules are the same in Prague as they are in Paris, London or Norwich - keep an eye on your stuff at all times, don%26#39;t get drunk and don%26#39;t flash the cash :) Just be streetwise, and don%26#39;t worry.

I have only ever once lost something in Prague, but that was my own silly fault (I parked my old UK-registered car on the street), but I have never been pickpocketed and I have lost count of the number of times that I have been there.

|||

Dont really be paranoid. Prague is not the wild west or a creepy rusty communist place.

Do not hold your breath just yet, though.

Just because a bad experience doesn%26#39;t happen to you, it doesn%26#39;t mean that any petty crimes do not exist.

Most recently, I came upon some guys who have been overcharched by a cab driver who charged them about 1000CZk for a one-way trip from the airport. The list of stories could go on and on.

Well, I have never been subject to a crime despite having lived in Prague for long time. I may not only have had a good luck, but I have been also very cautious wherever i went.

Considering you an ordinary tourist, there is only slim chances you will get a negative account, actually apart from sometimes surly customer service, homeless, drunks and offstandish commoners.

|||

btw, from my encounter, pickpocketing is on a rapid decline. I havent seen a picpocket for long time niether have I been reported one.

|||

Thanks for the replies...we will just take our usual precautions ( hotel safe for passports, money belt and keep my bag close to me on public transport )and I know we will have a great time in Prague..been looking forward to going there for ages.

Tour guide of the Jewish QTR

WE will be traveling to Prague in May and wanted to arrange a tour of the Jewish quarter. Can anyone recommend a good tour guide for this section of the city?

Thanks

|||

If memory serves me right. There is an office in front of the yellow synagogue that books tours. The one with the metal statue in front. I can%26#39;t recall the name of it, it was 2 years ago.

|||

Private tour guides are best, my favorite is Helena Matejickova, guide@matjecek.com, 062 110 003. If you prefer a %26#39;survivor%26#39;, check with Sylvie Wittmann at www.wittmann-tours.com. My favorite is Pavel Stransky, he is a delightful man with a moving story and wrote a book about it as well.

|||

What are the main recommendations if you just want to go it alone round there, i.e main attractions to check out etc?

Are there many pubs speckled about the Jewish Quarter? I like to mix drink and culture!

TIA

|||

?

|||

Thanks everyone for your comments. I actually contacted the Wittman tour company becuase i found they were recommended on Fodors and living prague website.

Shops for groceries in the center of Brno?

I am interested in shops or markets in the center of Brno, where bread, milk and similar groceries can be bought. We are situated near the The Square of Freedom.

As we are travelling with the kid, we shall need something of that kind and, at the same time we don%26#39;t want to spend our time in hipermarkets in shoping malls outside of center.

|||

There are plenty of places to get your groceries near náměstí Svobody (I wouldn%26#39;t call it Square of Freedom when you are there as nobody will know what you are talking about :) ) For example on the corner of Zámečnická and Dominikánské náměstí there is a little non-stop place which sells all you might need, or on the corner of Poštovská and Kobližná there is a little supermarket - I think it is a Julius Meinl.

Otherwise, if you want to a larger shop there is Tesco behind the railway station - on the ground floor there is a large supermarket.

To see where these places are, put them into www.mapy.cz

You shouldn%26#39;t have a problem finding any of these places - bread and groceries can also be bought at the railway station.

|||

Thank you very much! This was of huge importance for us :-)

|||

Hi, you inspired me to write a blog post about my favorite groceries and other shops in the centre of the city: brnonow.com/2009/…. There are 10 maps included.

I hope I do not reply too late!

|||

There is BILLA supermarket directly on the Namesti Svobody. You should be able to buy all the basics there. Business hours are:

Mon-Fri: 7-21

Sat: 7-19

Sun: 9-19

Other options within reasonable walking distance is INTERSPAR behind the trains station in the Vankovka Mall as well as Tesco behind the train station, but please be aware that Tesco is a real crap and weird people hang out around Tesco.

|||

Zagrepcanka: please, never translate local names, it%26#39;s rude.

Just a little correction, GCEK; there is no more Julius Meinel in our country. It was replaced mainly by Albert stores.

That mentioned Tesco store is not thad bad since it has renovated interior. It looks really pretty inside now. But outside you can still meet a lot of strange people there as in whole rail station area.

I can%26#39;t recommend that Interspar nearby in Vaňkovka as there is always a lack of opened cashdesks, and you will stay a long time in a row.

|||

I usually only go to Tesco by IKEA anyway :)

|||

790511 - can you explain why it is rude to translate local names? So in you opinion is it %26#39;rude%26#39; to say Old Town Square for example.

|||

It is a bit over the top to say that :) There is a convention, though, in that if a name place has become so well known in the other language then you translate it, %26#39;Old Town Square%26#39;, %26#39;Charles Bridge%26#39; being such examples - and indeed %26#39;Prague%26#39; is as well, as is %26#39;Czech Republic%26#39; - but we%26#39;ve had that one already :)

With regard to Brno, I am fussy about %26#39;Square of Freedom%26#39; (%26#39;náměstí Svobody%26#39;), though, and %26#39;Cabbage Market%26#39; (%26#39;Zelný trh%26#39;) - if you try asking for either in Brno you will get completely blank looks HOWEVER it is a losing battle trying to explain to the local tourist office to refrain from translating these places as any tourists who come inevitably end up getting lost trying to find them.

Of course you have to keep things within reason - you wouldn%26#39;t go to Prague and ask where the museum of Alphonsus Fly, or the house where Frank Jackdaw used to live. Nor would you ask for a train ticket to %26#39;Henry%26#39;s Castle%26#39;, or %26#39;New Town in Moravia%26#39;.

Here is an interesting article for those who are interested: http://accurapid.com/journal/28names.htm

|||

Tee hee - had to think for a bit who you mean by Franz Jackdaw...but got Fly straight away. On the ball today.

|||

The small town I visit in Orlicke Hory has a square called Namesti Svobody (lots of towns have this name) but because there is no foreign website, tourists would not refer to it as Freedom Square. So it is mainly the tourist board who is to blame.

But it is much harder for foreigners to pronounce in Czech.

Stopover along Krakow to Budapest train route

Next Fall we will be taking the day train from Krakow to Budapest, which takes 11 or 12 hours. The connections are in Katowice, Poland and Breclav, Czech Republic. Does anyone know of a nice small town along this route where we could spend a night or two to break up this journey? And yes, I know there%26#39;s a night train, but my husband and I have tried and failed to sleep on a train, even in a private train compartment in Europe.

|||

Which trains take you that route - do you have any other details? Obviously the quickest and by far the easiest way is the direct night train. Honestly - your problems falling asleep on the night train would pale into insignificance compared to the pain involved otherwise. You will never want to see another train again, and you would be even more exhausted!

Are you looking at the 0723 from Krakow, arriving eventually at 1832? If so, you will have a 2 hour stop off in Breclav which in itself is nothing really to write home about, but it is surrounded by some fabulous places where you could go - I would suggest Mikulov, which is a beautiful little town on the border of Austria http://www.mikulov.cz/tourism - I like the Hotel Tanzberg …ubytovani-hotel.eu/accommodation-Mikulov.htm but there is a whole list of hotels there and you should stay at least one night. Presuming you arrive in BŘeclav at 1246, The train from Břeclav leaves at 1331, and arrives at 1359. It happens to go through Valtice, which is a UNESCO world heritage site …wikipedia.org/wiki/Lednice%E2%80%93Valtice_… so you could stop off there if you wish, or go the next day.

From Mikulov to Budapest you have three feasible train options at 0802, 1002 and 1402, all involving a change in Breclav.

The train from Břeclav to Mikulov costs c. 30 Crowns/1 Euro, and it is well worth it.

Bear in mind though that if you got the night train you would save on a hotel room and you would save valuable sightseeing time, and at c. 60 Euros train fare it is not bad (plus c. 30 Euros sleeping supplement).

See www.idos.cz for train times/routes.

Hope this helps!

|||

Thanks so much. That%26#39;s just the information I was looking for. Yes, we will probably take the 7:23 train from Krakow. I checked out the towns you mentioned and both appear to be well worth a visit. I so appreciate your suggestions.

Cesky krumlov or Trebon

Hi,

We will be making our 4th visit to prague in March. We will be coming up by train from Vienna and planned to spend a couple of nights in the south before coming to Prague. Our original plan was to spend 1 night in Ceske Budejovice and 1 night in Cesky Krumlov. We stayed 2 nights in Cesky krumlov on our first trip to Prague and loved it. Since we have already been there we were wondering whether to go to Trebon instead. I recently read where Trebon is %26quot;a poor mans Cesky krumlov%26quot;.

Opinions ???

|||

Go for it. You might even prefer it! Also consider Telč if you want a smaller place, or Brno, which some people say is a %26#39;poor man%26#39;s Vienna%26#39;, but many find it more pleasant.

It is all subjective, anyway :)

Don%26#39;t come at the moment as it is snowing and very nasty - lots of slush and slipping around...

|||

Thank you Gcek,

I have considered Telc but the problem has always been getting there. Very difficult train/bus connections. Tabor is another possibility but is probably better suited for a day trip from Prague.

I hadn%26#39;t considered Brno although I see you can get there very easily by train from Vienna. I will do some more research on it.

Bob

|||

Here%26#39;s something to whet your appetite http://www.brno.cz/index.php?lan=en but it is not really somewhere that can be seen or experienced in a few hours so I wouldn%26#39;t do that if that is your intention. Many people just go and don%26#39;t venture too far and are disappointed - in fact I had the same experience in Prague the first time I went - I was just passing through and thought I would check it out, but I didn%26#39;t see the bits that you are %26#39;supposed%26#39; to see ...

What about Kutná Hora? That%26#39;s only an hour away.

Telč is accessible by direct bus from Prague, but it does take 3 hours and leaves at 6.20 am :)

|||

Thank you again. I will take a look at the web page.

On our second trip to Prague we took a 2 night side trip to Kutna Hora. Very interesting small town. Enjoyed our stay there. Looking for something similar.

|||

Trebon is a very nice spa town with renaissance and baroque houses on the main square and renaissance chateau with a park. It%26#39;s situated in a Protected Landscape Area with lots of ponds and it%26#39;s famous for its carps (Třeboňský kapr) and other fishes which are served in the restaurants in the town. There is a brewery founded in 1379. This area (Třeboň area = %26quot;Třeboňsko%26quot;) is visited for hiking, cycling, watermanship and fishing. There are many nice places in South Bohemia, so you can also do many trips from Třeboň.

Short info - official sites of Czech rep.

+ many information about other places and other info not only for tourists

Official sites of the town - photos (only in Czech, En version isn%26#39;t avaiable yet) www.mesto-trebon.cz/mhp/mhp.asp?fotogalerie

Sites of Information and Cultural Centre in Třeboň http://www.itrebon.cz/index.php?l=en

Sites of the chateau http://www.zamek-trebon.eu/history/

I think Trebon is worth a visit.

|||

Thank you very much for the info.

We are still undecided but this should help.

What do you think of Tabor ?

|||

Trebon is really very nice, as pointed out above. And I also like Tabor. Each town has something to offer. It%26#39;s like asking which is better, Nashville or Memphis? They%26#39;re both good!

|||

Thank you Casablanca (great movie !!!!)

Tabor appeals to me from a travel logisitc viewpoint. It is on the Ceske Budejovice - Prague train line. We have had good experiences with train travel in the Czech Republic, buses haven%26#39;t been so good. Much more confusing.

Still have time to decide. All this advice really helps.

|||

Some info about Tábor:

It%26#39;s better than Třeboň when considering transport. Information about the city - official info - tabor.cz/en/informations/history-and-sights/ . It%26#39;s Hussits city founded in 15th century. There is a Hussite museum with complex of underground tunnels www.husmuzeum.cz/search.php… , late Gothic town hall, some renaissance buildings, Kotnov tower, some churches and chapels, theatre, baroque chateau, exposition of Middle-age treasure tabor.cz/en/…tabor-treasure-exhibition.html and many other interesting places.

Besides the sights the opportunities are similar like in Třeboň - hiking, cycling, watermanship and

fishing. No spas in Tábor, but there is a swimming pool and the oldest dam lake in Central Europe - Jordán. Other sport facilities tabor.cz/en/…sportovni-zarizeni.html .

As in another city in Czech rep. there is plenty of sights in the neigbourhood tabor.cz/en/… - for example historical electric railway to Bechyně, which has medieval monastery, spas

(http://www.laznebechyne.cz/ only czech+german) and a chateau http://www.panstvi-bechyne.cz/index.php?idw=6 .

Very nice is chateau Červená Lhota http://www.zamek-cervenalhota.eu/history/ .

Besides beautiful landscape above ground there are caves Chýnovské jeskyně http://www.caves.cz/en/caves/chynov-caves/ and for technical history fans there is an old railway bridge near Bechyně and chain bridge from 19th century near Stádlec.

I hope you%26#39;ll enjoy your holidays in CR at whatever place you will have chosen. (+ I hope you will understand despite of my grammar)

|||

Your grammer is very good. I have no problem understanding you.

Thank you for the info. It will make our decision a little easier.

considering trip

last year i did a trip to europe and spent most of my time in amsterdam (was my type of town in every which way) then went to brussels and then paris, which was a very beautiful city. am planning a trip in preliminary stages and have heard good things about prague just from heresay. was wondering if it is comparable to any of the places ive visited. am with a group of 25-35, mostly single some married men who like to party til the wee hours of the morning but most importantly interact with likeminded people. couple people are chef%26#39;s so we eat were they choose, so good food is a plus. any input would be helpful as i will take what i hear to the rest in order to make decision. other main contenders are tokyo or hong kong. Thanks.

|||

I was going to ask how long the visit would be, and that perhaps you could combine Prague with a couple of other cities and visits. Many combine with Budapest or Vienna etc. The good thing i this part of Europe, it%26#39;s vey quick to step into other countries.

But the Tokyo/Hong Kong %26#39;contenders%26#39; has thrown me, I really don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll find more opposites. It%26#39;s extremely difficult for people here to advise if you would be better in Prague or Japan, HK China IMO.

Europe is SO different, only you can choose what continent.

Stoofer

|||

I would choose Hong Kong.

TORII

|||

Prague is upbeat and fun similar to Amsterdam. Another one that is very similar to Amsterdam is Barcelona. You could get a euro discount carrier from Prague to Barcelona. Love Vancouver too.

|||

supposing you are single and your intentions are purely only hooking up with some beautiful girls do not come to Prague.

Let%26#39;s do the math. I dont know the accurate statistics hence im just gonna guess. Prague has approx. 1 mio inhabitants, a half of whom are females. Here are roughly 240 thousand young/younger women at your age. Some of them are already attached, which means that by estimation 150 thousand of girls and young women of various charachters, appearances and reputations are available.

Now, Hong Kong has 7mio inhabitants....

p.s.: I personally believe that the fame and glory around beauty of Czech girls is overrated.

|||

Great post and q.

%26quot;mostly single some married men who like to party til the weee house of the morning...%26quot;

From BC... yes, go HK. Tokyo might be to tame for them / you.

Men. Party. Meat. Beer. Prague. Yes...

Enjoy. All of your options will take you to the promised land...

|||

Prague would be the cheaper destination if money comes into play at all--just think with the xtra cash how drunk you could be by the wee morning...

|||

Thanks for all the replies, jirikoo great breakdown of the stats but that one beautiful lady out of the roughly 3.5 billion worldwide might be found there, and i might have to be the judge of the overrating of czech girls myself as ive heard quite the contrary.

seasmoke ive actually been told by a couple other ppl who visited tokyo albeit it was a long time ago they visited that for some in our group they may not find it lively enough to their rock standards and also heard that if you leave the tourist area it is difficult conversating in english with most ppl, thats from heresay but communication with minimal of same language hasnt been a issue in previous experiences. So weve essentially thrown that one out with this group anyways.

weve also decided that if we go to czech, everyone wants to see at least another country within europe. i know barcelona was mentioned but was thinking that instead of flying perhaps the train system would be once again the way to go and looking at a map as to proximity, Germany seems to be an ideal location, we also have some in our group very interested in checking out italy.

So its gonna be between HK and europe, does the same super trains run all accross europe. would it be better to fly to italy from czech if thats were we wanted to see secondary, and if going to germany which would be ideal frankfurt or berlin, or would there be a more desired country close by to visit within a roughly 10 day period. Thanks.

|||

As per my initial response, I did ask about other countries but it depends how long you visit.

Even a 7 day visit can incorporate two cities.

Budapest in Hungary, Vienna in Austria, are only a few hours away by easy train link. From Vancouver, it%26#39;s a no brainer to go that option if in Europe IMO.

Stoofer

|||

P.S. Regarding Germany, Berlin or Munich would be best choice from Prague IMO.

Day trip to Kutna Hora

I am really interested in going on a day trip to Kutna Hora while i am staying in Prague next month. The two main things i would like to see are the silvermine and of course the Bone Church. I know you can get the train there but as i am aware the church is not on Kutna Hora but in a town called Sedlic(?) Can anyone give me a good plan to get to both. Ideally i would want to go about 9am and come back to Prague in the evening/late afternoon.

Thanks!

|||

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g274707-i96-k230…

this might be a useful direction from Unclegus.

|||

jizdnirady.idnes.cz/vlakyautobusy/spojeni/

Czech railways timetable

|||

We%26#39;re also planning to do a day trip to Kutna Hora next month, but you should know the silvermine is closed from November-March.

There is also a local train that runs from the main station to the centre of town, if you don%26#39;t feel like walking, although I believe the Bone Church in Sedlec is closer to the main train station. This site gives you more details on transit in Kutna Hora.

http://wikitravel.org/en/Kutna_Hora

|||

there are plenty of other things to see in Kutna Hora.The Italian court building is superb,we had a private tour (well when I say private there were only 3 of us on it)It is a really lovely place.there is also a prety crappy torture museum in the basement of this building as you enter the courtyard on your right.St Barbaras Cathedral is well worth a visit and has some very interesting Murals.There is also an old water fountain/water storage place at the top of the town,it has been turned into an art and crafts gallery.There are sevral good returant/ bars in the town.

We had lunch in the Dacicky Pivince just set back from the street Rejskova,It has a log burning fire very good food and their own beer.

The toen is set on a hill and you get some great views of the whole area.

Both times I have been to Kutna Hora we got a train about 10.00am and were back in Prague by about 5.00 pm.

|||

Thanks for your advice guys. Bit gutted that the Silvermine will be shut! But youcan%26#39;t win them all

|||

The real highlight of visit to Kutna Hora is Church of Assumtion of Virgin Mary, former church of Cisteciac Abbey - largest 13 century gothic church in Bohemia was seriously damaged in 15th century and more then 200 years later totally rebuild by greatest Baroque architect in Central Europe Jan Santini Eichel, who developed his individual %26quot;Baroque Gothic%26quot; style. Church was recently open after meticulous restoration.

Martin

|||

We spent 2 nights in Kutna Hora as a side trip from Prague a few years ago (our second of 3 trips to prague). Great little town !!! I don%26#39;t understand why more people don%26#39;t stay a night there. Like Uncle Gus, we ate and drank the Dacicky Pivince. Great spot !!! Make sure you try the Boar Gulash. I think we ended up having all of our meals there. The bone church should not be missed.

|||

the first time I went to the Dacicky Pivince,I had goulash soup in a bread bowl which was wonderful sepecially on a cold winter day..On my last visit I had the wild boar goulash which is truely fantastic.

best way to travel through central Europe?

Hi there,

I am planning a trip with my husband, his cousin and wife to central Europe in May or June. We%26#39;re all in our 30%26#39;s or early 40%26#39;s. What is the best way to get around from Prague to Budapest and perhaps a few other cities like Krakow or someplace in Germany or Austria? car rental (which companies are best)? train (should we book tickets in advance)? plane (again which are the best companies in Europe)?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks!

|||

Between Prague and Budapest the rain is the best and most comfortable, but if you want to see other places you need to get some sort of itinerary together so we can help you more! Some tickets can be bought on-line, and others cannot, and you have to bear in mind that although distances may not seem that great on the map, timewise they can be huge (Prague - Krakow is an overnight journey, for example).

Also flying isn%26#39;t always that feasible or cheap in Europe between some centres.

If you make a list of some places that you fancy seeing and maybe someone can suggest you you might do it, or let you know whether it is a crazy idea or not :)

|||

sorry - %26#39;train is most comfortable%26#39; :)

They should have a preview option for these posts...

Hilton Old Town

V Celnici 7,

11121 Prague 1,

i have conducted a huge search but with only 3 nights, i need to ensure i see this all. help.. please

|||

Also any tours?

Also We are not that into the high brow stuff.. but like cool stuff in restaurants with a theme...basically anything we can say we have experienced and is different

We are on a budget as such but if its uniqueu we will be willign to pay that bit extra.

and finally we prob. wil spend the late nights i na hotel..unless something unique is qorth going to..its cold as much as London is at the mo

|||

help please

|||

Get a decent guide book - it should have everything you need in there. Don%26#39;t panic - You%26#39;re right in the centre and everything should be obvious and within walking distance! Your hotel should be able to help you with what is on at the opera and theatre.

You won%26#39;t need any takeaways (can%26#39;t think of any anyway, except for McDs and KFC). Massage I%26#39;m not sure, but maybe you need something to calm yourself down :)

Don%26#39;t necessarily go for the places that have been recommended as they are invariably more expensive than the equally good one next door at half the price, and avoid anywhere with a %26#39;tourist menu%26#39;, or prices given in Euros, or beer priced at over 40 Crowns.

And Prague is primarily for the sightseeing, so I would concentrate on that - you only have three days :)

|||

Look at your previous posting, Torii provided some recommendations for restaurants and Bars.

She also recommends U Prince as a good bar with excellent views. For an afternoon tea or drinks you could drop into Cafe Slavia, on the embankment opposite the National Theatre.

For a special meal you could have a look at Kampa Park, but this is not cheap.

http://www.kampagroup.com/en/index.php

Re tours, if you wish to visit the Jewish Quarter,

Wittman tours provide an excellent service.

You would want to visit the castle, but don%26#39;t bother with any tours, just go by yourselves and enjoy.

For takeways I do stand up bars at Wenceslas Square, sausage, bread, beer. (not many would recommend this)

You could probably manage the odd McDonalds which are everywhere, and not far from Hilton as you walk towards the bottom of Wenceslas Square.

Hilton also has a Gordon Ramsey restaurant, which is recommended by many for food although not perhaps for ambiance.

For massages look at this website

www.expats.cz/prague/czech/massage/namjai/

|||

Re: %26#39;For takeways I do stand up bars at Wenceslas Square, sausage, bread, beer. (not many would recommend this)%26#39;

I would definitely recommend this approach for most, if not all, of your meals.

This is what you are letting yourself in for:

www.youtube.com/watch…

Look at lunch as well.

It%26#39;s all part of the Czech experience and you shouldn%26#39;t go home without it!

Dobrou chuť!

:))
