I am worried after reading loads of stories about the prevalance of pickpockets in Prague...is it really such a major issue ? I hope not..I am street smart and well travelled but do not want to be paranoid while sightseeing.

then don%26#39;t be ;-)

Of course petty crime exists, as it does everywhere.
If you look like you are paranoid whilst sightseeing you will be %26#39;targeted%26#39;! The rules are the same in Prague as they are in Paris, London or Norwich - keep an eye on your stuff at all times, don%26#39;t get drunk and don%26#39;t flash the cash :) Just be streetwise, and don%26#39;t worry.
I have only ever once lost something in Prague, but that was my own silly fault (I parked my old UK-registered car on the street), but I have never been pickpocketed and I have lost count of the number of times that I have been there.

Dont really be paranoid. Prague is not the wild west or a creepy rusty communist place.
Do not hold your breath just yet, though.
Just because a bad experience doesn%26#39;t happen to you, it doesn%26#39;t mean that any petty crimes do not exist.
Most recently, I came upon some guys who have been overcharched by a cab driver who charged them about 1000CZk for a one-way trip from the airport. The list of stories could go on and on.
Well, I have never been subject to a crime despite having lived in Prague for long time. I may not only have had a good luck, but I have been also very cautious wherever i went.
Considering you an ordinary tourist, there is only slim chances you will get a negative account, actually apart from sometimes surly customer service, homeless, drunks and offstandish commoners.

btw, from my encounter, pickpocketing is on a rapid decline. I havent seen a picpocket for long time niether have I been reported one.

Thanks for the replies...we will just take our usual precautions ( hotel safe for passports, money belt and keep my bag close to me on public transport )and I know we will have a great time in Prague..been looking forward to going there for ages.
