Obecni dum/ Municiple House - or other suggestions for a tea

Hi All -

This will be my 7th visit to Prague - as I absolutely adore the place! I am returning with my Mother for my Birthday for a short weekend trip, (27th Feb - 2nd March) and we are hoping to have coffee and cake at the Municiple House. Can anyone advised what the cakes/pastries are like here? I am aware the the actual building itself is supposed to be spectacular.

Or would anybody else advise any other coffee shops. As it is my Birthday we are looking for something a little bit special.

Thanks in advance!!!

Hello

I can recommend the cakes/pastries at the Obecni Dum, There is a good choice. The building is spectacular and make sure you go to the ladies loos where you have your coffee ,they are up the stairs and wow its like being on a cruise ship in the 1920s!

Also another lovely place to go for a drink alchohol /coffee is the roof terrace at the U Prince the views are spectacular especially at dusk.

Can%26#39;t speak for the ladies loos ,but the Gents are certainly spectaclar,as is the whole building.

You can actually do a tour of the place if you wish.

I have eaten there a couple of times but never managed to get to the cakes ,but they have always looked very good.

If I was visiting Prague with my mother the Municiple House would be a definate place for tea.

Thanks All!!

I will certainly be visiting the Municiple House then! Can%26#39;t wait! 11 days and counting :)

Or the Cafe Slavia opposite the National Theatre - the toilets are quite spectacular in there as well :)

I have always found in the past that although the Obecni Dum is unsurpassed in its beauty, the standards of waiting and, in recent years, food, leave something to be desired.

I first went when it was a dingy neglected dump, and there was even talk of demolition - some American kids had bought the downstairs section and turned it into a sort of nightclub (I think it was called something like %26#39;Pilsener Bar%26#39;), and the rest of it certainly looked its age. The renovation job that they did in the mid 1990s was incredible in its detail, and the beer hall downstairs just cannot be missed. The food they served then was great as well - you could get a huge koleno (pork knuckle) on the bone on a big wooden slab and all the trimmings, just as it should be. Beer was a decent price as well. The next time I visited I noticed some oddities upstairs in the cafe - the menu had on it such delights as %26#39;scrag end of lamb%26#39;, %26#39;mutton cut in prime%26#39; and %26#39;pineapple froth%26#39; - which I pointed out to the manager but he said that it must be right as it had been translated through the British Council (!) Judging from their current website it appears that they are using the same translator :)

Then a couple of years ago I took some friends down to sample the delights of a properly-done vepřové koleno as described above, only to be presented with a plate of sorry-looking (and tasting) offcuts instead and it disappointed me hugely. I have just had a quick look at some reviews for the %26#39;French%26#39; Restaurant opposite the cafe, and they are not too hot - maybe Brewsta has a more up-to-date experience.

Don%26#39;t therefore go expecting anything gourmet, but the surroundings are incredible - go on a tour as well.

Cake and pastries you can%26#39;t really go wrong anywhere, though, and the coffee is good.

Enjoy, and have a good birthday!

Twisted husband%26#39;s arm and we had coffee and cakes in Obecni Dum during our last trip to Prague in June last year. The setting is fantastic, prices however reflect this and one coffee + cake is the same as the cost of 5 beers and a snack in the outskirts - but worth it nonetheless (although aforesaid husband was seen to grimace!). One thing I thought strange though was that you have to buy the coffee and the cakes separately from different waiters. Toilets are the best P** in Prague though!!!

If you go to my profile there is a picture of me having a beer and Becherovka in the American bar of the Municiple House.

Seems everyone like the toilets there.

just reading this thread has made me think about my next visit (may i hope) and what to do.

so i thing think a visit to the finer toilets of the city.

I could entitle it.

P***ing in Prague,Pleasant Places to Pee.

Yes I know... It has always been a place on my %26#39;to do list%26#39; - but unfortunately we have never gotten round to it! This visit I will make it a must!!!!!

There is always so much to see and do in Prague! Each visit is different! My friends can never understand why I have returned - so many times! However, it is the perfect place to unwind and take in the atmosphere! I can%26#39;t think of a better way to spend my Birthday! :):)
