Prague New Years Eve - Recommendations please

We are going to Prague for 3 days staying in Mala Strana arriving on New Years Eve at around 2.00pm.

We are looking for somewhere nice to eat in the afternoon/early evening rather than go for an expensive evening meal. Can anyone recommend a nice restaurant/cafe that we will be able to get a nice meal from?

Also we are wondering where the best place to watch the fireworks from is and what time they start?

Does anyone have any nice restaurant recommendations for our other nights. We are looking for some nice atmospheric restaurants with a nice setting and good food.

Thanks for your help

New years eve midnight fireworks - watch anywhere down by the river, there is also a display at the Letna park at 7pm on New years day.

New years eve firework crowds can be hectic and overwhelming and watch out for people lighting and throwing home made fireworks ,staying on the castle side of the river is safer.

Eat your main meal at lunchtime it will be cheaper than in the evening, just look at menus outside of restaurants there are many to choose from ,You will be spoilt for choice where to drink just check out the bars beforehand and check they are not having parties which can work out expensive.

People will start %26quot;testing%26quot; the fireworks when ever it gets dark... But most of them will start at midnight. You should just find a nice bar on Mala Strana and stay there. Don%26#39;t go to the crowed Old Town area. There will be a really nice and big fireworks on Thursday 6PM. The best for you would be to cross the river and watch it from there.

Don%26#39;t know what is your budget but Hergertova Cihelna or Kampa Park are really nice restaurants with great view over the river. Cafe Savoy is also on your side of river and has a great interior.

I wouldn`t reccomend you to go to eat in restaurants in main squares and main streets they are really over priced. If you would like to taste traditional czech food then a good place to go is Hloupy Honza in Skolska 12, from Vodickova street second left if you are walking from Vaclavske square. They have fair prices and very good traditional food.

If you dont mind to stand up outside then sausage in the afternoon in Vaclavske square is a perfect taste of Prague. My girlfriend is english and she loved it.

Also is good to go to Bredovsky dvur, they have the best Pilsner Urguell in Prague from 1000 litre tanks, open kitchen and good local food. Try the baked Pork knee with fresh bread and mustard. Also, U Pinkasu is a very nice pub with good beer and food. You cant go wrong in many places this time of the year. They try hard, but read your bill and dont hesitate to ask if you have any doubts.

Fireworks are best down by the river on any bridge, but the best view you would have is from Petrin. Up the hill from Mala Strana or from the side of the castle. There is a balcony for an amazing view. Be carefull at night, lots of people throw small fireworks in front of you on the street. Better to go to a bar and enjoy. Markets on the Old Town square are fantastic, taste local mulled wine it%26#39;s great. Even though Pilsner Urquell is the most famous beer in Prague, you have to try Gambrinus, you can%26#39;t buy it in England because they are keeping the best for themselves. Dont walk past Hajek, brilliant cake shops and taste lovely, i would recommend medovnik (honey, layerd cake).

Enjoy, if this is your first time, then I%26#39;m sure that it wont be your last, its beatuiful.

Stand up buffets - my favourites! But not many would believe that! There is also decent and cheap restaurant in Hybernska opposite Kempinski. Not bad at all and hardly ever mentioned.

In the Mala Strana area I would recommend Gitanes in Trziste street, it is a mediterranean restaurant, very small and cozy. One thing I would avoid is sausages on Wenceslas Square - you can smell the old frying fat from afar, it is overpriced and if you are unlucky that cheat on you with the change.

Quite true Martina there are lots of threads on here about people being short changed at these stands .

As reported in the Prague Monitor Today.

%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;Prague to restrict New Year%26#39;s celebration sites

Public access to the sites of Prague%26#39;s major New Year%26#39;s activities will be restricted during this year%26#39;s celebrations. The upper part of Wenceslas Square, where TV Nova stages its New Year%26#39;s show, will be closed all day 31 December, and nearby Vodičkova and Jindřišská streets will be closed from 6pm. Letenské sady will be closed from the afternoon of 1 January. Official New Year%26#39;s Day fireworks will be launched from the plain at 6pm. %26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

Certainly don%26#39;t eat in the main streets... you pay a lot of bucks for nothing.

Take into account that it%26#39;s really crowded in the centrum at that moment so be patient etc.

I went last year to an underground bar in the early evening, and stayed there till around midnight.

Be early... LOTS OF PEOPLE.

Happy New Year already :)
