spend 6 full days in Prague or visit what surrounding areas

my sister and I plan on being in Prague in March. Counting 2 days for travel to and from the US, we will have 6 full days to spend in Prague. This is one place that we have never visited, so should we spend the entire time in Prague? If so what day trips should we take? Other suggestions? We are thinking about the Intercontinental hotel becuase of my hotel points, but would welcome other suggestions.

Thanks,

Look at the Crowne Plaza Prague Castle if you are looking to offload ICS Priority Club Points.

Six days in Prague sounds good but you will probably want to spend maybe two days outside the city. You could take an overnight trip to Cesky Krumlov or perhaps a day trips to Kutna Hora and Karlovy Vary.

thanks and I will keep you posted. do you hire a private tour guide for the city? Any great places to eat? We like local, not touristy....what about shopping...we like antiques...do we need visas?

if we leave the city, do we rent a car or use public transportation..

thanks again

Public transportation is good here (locals sometimes differ). You should definitely get out of the city and experiencee more. Friends form Houston visited over the summer and hired a guide for C. Krumlov. If you care for the info, please pm and I can try to locate the name/service.

.......

Karlovy Vary is nice but it overrun with non-Czech shop owners and the service-type people are more used to dealing with tourists from the other side of the western border. You can definitely tell a difference in the level of friendliness.

.......

C.Krumlov would need to be an overnight trip to truly enjoy it. There are quite a few options for day trips if you don%26#39;t want to up and change hotels.

Thanks so much. We did some reading last night and I think are considering flying to Budapest and stay for 2 nights and then either fly or take the train to Prague. We were hoping that on the train we could see some of the country side. Do you know if we need Visa%26#39;s for entry? We do want a reference for a guide...

Thanks again.

If you have an American passport, you do not need visa. The below thread, someone recommended a guide,

you can also search the forum.

If you had seven or eight days I would recommend Prague and Budapest. Six days may leave you feeling rather rushed. Train is good option for travelling between the two, but don%26#39;t expect dramatic scenery.

we are trying to addd 2 or 3 days to our trip. Would it better to fly from Budapest to Prague?

Thanks again

I think I%26#39;ve reacted to your query on TT already. Anyway, to your question if you should spend the entire time in Prague, I say it is so subjective. I%26#39;ve met many tourist in Prague and some of them just said how wonderfull everything was and a week for them wasn%26#39;t enough, etc. On the other side, some others naturally got bored after one day in Prague.

If I were you I would spend two nights in Prague and the rest outside. Well, im biased since my popular region is definitely South Bohemia therefore my recommendations are transparent. My most favorite place in CZ after Prague is Chlum u Trebone - small town with a pond system and picturesque forests surrounding it. Its completely off-beaten-tracks. Other places in South Bohemia are amazing, too. Click on http://www.jiznicechy.org/en/

On balance, it requires a rental car, which can be a setback for you.

As always thanks to you all for taking the time to write me. We found that in booking our tickets...it is cheaper to book two tickets one a RT to London and a second RT to Prague. We both are member of AA FF that is the reason for sticking with American Airlines. I got an email from Michael, who was recommended a guide, and he suggested 2-3 half day tours of Prague to allow us time on our own..then day trips to be determined and one over trip trip. We are going to stay at the Intercontinental because I am an elite member of their club and should be upgraded. We will be bringing sweaters and warm clothing as well as good waterproof footwear. According to the weather reports we will need to be prepared.

Thanks again and we welcome any other suggestions

I would suggest you not to worry about that so much in advance. Just take some %26quot;outdoor%26quot; clothing to be prepared and you%26#39;ll see, if Prague itself is interesting enough (for both of you personally) to spend here 6 full days.

If not - well, just have a look at www.myczechrepublic.com or maybe http://www.virtualczech.cz/?lang=en or elsewhere to get some inspiration and in 1-2 hours (or the next morning) you can be sitting on the train/bus.

Generally, most places in the Czech republic are doable in 1 day, trains can not be %26quot;sold out%26quot; and in the first class you don%26#39;t need any reservation at all (only the compulsory on some special trains) and all the main routes are serviced every 1-2 hours or even more often... www.idos

There is no need to plan the whole stay detailed in advance (and then to be disappointed if on %26quot;The Day%26quot; it is raining or so).
