We collect small things such as silver...like tea sets, trays, beakers, things that can fit into our suitcases. I also read that small clocks are good thing to look for. I read the threads, but they seem old...did not find any up to date information. Just returned from Istanbul and found the ideal small silver cups that will always remind me of my time in Turkey. I love to shop markets and antique fairs. How do I find out about them. Thanks again for all of the great information.

thanks for the information. Do you know anything about anitque fairs or markets in and around Prague?
Thanks again

Just a quick search found these firmy.cz/Obchody-a-obchudky/…Praha , but there are many more than this -what you need to look for are %26#39;zastavárna%26#39; or %26#39;bazar%26#39; (sort of pawn shop), which invariably contain a wide range of weird and wonderful stuff. The antique shops in the centre inevitably cater for the tourist market and therefore the prices are higher, but if you don%26#39;t mind rummaging there are still rich pickings to be had.
There was a time when many items of furniture (and other things as well) which many would class as antiques would be left on the street - I can clearly remember in the Hanspaulka district of Prague 6 there used to be a special collection every week whereby people (usually property developers working on behalf of the embassies) would just empty the houses and leave its contents on the street. I used to have a field day and collected loads of books, pictures, etc - I would have gone for the furniture as well but there is only so much you can pick up. Goodness knows what happened to it all.

Thanks again...when we leave Prague for day trips, any suggestions for antique fairs or markets? We do not want to buy the usual tourist souvenirs.

firmy.cz/Obchody-a-obchudky/…Praha , sorry but is there a English version? Thanks

Unfortunately not ... but the addresses remain the same, if that is any consolation :)
Maybe someone else on this forum has their favourites - I can only really help with the ones in Brno, but even there the very %26#39;best%26#39; one has been developed into %26#39;luxury%26#39; flats, so they are getting few and far between. To be perfectly honest, it may sound terrible to say, but many Czechs (I am not saying all) don%26#39;t set much store by antiques nowadays and any that are out there tend to be exported or sold at high prices. The rest is junk, but as you know, sometimes junk can throw up the moust unlikely of treasures - a lot of the most interesting stuff has a Communist-related theme, which the Czechs (and Slovaks) are only too happy to put straight in the bin - I%26#39;ve got some great things, but my wife always hides them if I try and display them :) - Even the flea market wouldn%26#39;t be really any good for you.
There is this http://www.bustehradantik.cz/ but it is out of town, near Lidice, and is only held every two weeks - the dates are given on the site (in English), but you have to be there really early as apparently the German and Austrian collectors (who are past masters at getting their towels on the sunlounger first :)) get there at opening time (about 6 a.m.) and snaffle up the best stuff.
Otherwise there are several %26#39;starožitnost%26#39; (antique) shops dotted around, but as I say, you might be paying top dollar for many of their wares - it isn%26#39;t like Turkey at all, and you certainly wouldn%26#39;t be able to bargain the price down like you can in Istanbul (that would just not be the done thing!) :)
Have a look through this list of antique shops - many have links to the companies%26#39; own websites, some of which might be in English, but if not it should be clear what type of thing they sell.
Good luck!

Thanks and I will do some research on everything written. We are not coming to shop, but it is something we like to do. Will be in Paris for Thanksgiving and so will make the flea markets then.
