On my way to Rome, I have a connection through Prague. I am flying Czech Air. The connection is about 7 hours in length.
My question is two fold:
1. Is it possible to leave the airport during the layover to check out Prague? I am assuming bags are passed through to our connection and we could just go with what is in our carry ons.
2. Is 7 hours enough to check out 1-2 sites? I saw that the airport is 8 miles from the city center - not sure how long that would take via taxi with city traffic.
Any suggestions?

Definitely leave the airport. 5-6 hours is more than enough time to see the historical downtown, which is fairly compact and all the major sights in walkable distance.
My suggestion is to take a taxi from the airport (AAA Taxi) and let the driver drop you in front of the Prague Castle. The fare should be around 370 CZK
Once you%26#39;re done with the Castle walk down the Nerudova Street to Malostranske namesti (Sq.) and then accross the Charles Bridge, Karlova Street to the Old Town Sq and possibly the Venceslas Sq.
The whole distance from the Castle to Venceslas Sq. is less than 2 miles.
At Venceslas Sq. board the metro at the Mustek or Muzeum station and take the green A-line to endstation Dejvicka. At Dejvicka transfer to bus no 119 which goes to the airport. You will need a 26 CZK ticket for the whole trip and allow at least 45 minutes for the trip.
DO NOT... and I will repeat that: DO NOT just wave down any taxi or board one parked on the curbside - these are the infamous Prague taxi drivers who will rip you off and give the decent cab drivers in Prague a bad name.
Going back to the airport either take the public transport or look for the yellow AAA taxis. No worries about taking a yellow cab from the airport parked in front of the terminals - AAA taxis are safe and reliable.
