I know that prague is super cold in the winter time, but I love visiting Europe in winter months around Christmas. I%26#39;m planning to take a trip to Prague in Dec 2009 and would like some feedback.
Has anyone been there during the winter months? If I go without a tour, will I be alright? I don%26#39;t know the language, although I%26#39;ll be sure to take a mini tourist dictionary with me to sort of %26quot;Get by%26quot;
I%26#39;ve looked into the tour option, but was wondering what it would be like if I just went on my own.
Thanks!

Simple enough to do on your own. I am not a fan of group tours at all. Enough people speak some English to get by...but, do try to learn the basic phrases...the gesture goes a long way.

If you are looking for real %26quot;Cental European%26quot; city full of fantastiv architecture, great food, even better beer, and so much to see and do, then without doubt Prague is the place to go. Krakow and Budapest are great, but Prague has the edge.
It is cold in winter, but winter in New Jersey probably isn%26#39;t too warm either, so no worries about the climate.
You will love it.

Prague in the wintertime for me is the best time to go. I have been to Prague, too many times to count, but I had always visited in the summer months. I liked it enough but it never really sparked that sense that so many people write and talk about that I thought maybe Prague just wasn%26#39;t my thing. But this year I actually lived there from August-January ( I just got back) and for me Prague just got better and better the worse the weather got. I fell absolutely head over heels in love with Prague as soon as the weather started to get cold and grey. I know that must sound pretty strange, but for me I think the architecture and feeling of Prague is better suited for greyish weather. The buildings and mysteriousness of Prague came alive during these fall/winter months. And as soon as all the Christmas decorations came out I was in heaven. I had never spent a Christmas outside Canada before, and I don%26#39;t think I will ever spend another in Canada again, if I can help it. I had never experienced such a wonderful Christmassy atmosphere like that in my life. T felt like a kid again, at Christmas time full of awe, it was the most beautiful place I had ever seen.
As for doing a tour, I would not do one. But that%26#39;s just me. I like to go and do my own thing, and not knowing the language will not be a problem, everyone speaks enough English in the city center that you should not worry.
Good luck and have fun.

Just got back from 4 days in January. It was great, and we never do the tours. We go to towns specifically to look at the art nouveau and Prague is one of the best. Even with me taking photos outside all day if we were bundled up, we were fine. Your sense of excitement will take over and you won%26#39;t notice the cold as much. The quite off season was great with no crowds etc. Plus every city we went to from late December to early January was decorated for the holidays which makes ir extra special. Lights everywahere. Have fun

This is why I always go in December and January.
So glad you had a great time and I know just what you mean about the quietness of the restaurants.

We were there last Easter and it was -4 with a bit of a wind chill too.
But somehow, standing out in the old square, well wrapped up and sipping mulled wine, was the Prague scene we wanted to experience. I%26#39;d go for it without hesitation. The frosted roof tops look amazing under the city lights.

We are going to Prague in about 3 weeks time, in February. Is it still very cold? Is Prague covered in snow at the moment?
|||
Chilly - no snow to speak of at the moment - a bit more forecast for next week, but you don%26#39;t want that as it quickly gets slushy and messy and it doesn%26#39;t tend to stick around in the city centre. A good frost is what you want, but it is anyone%26#39;s guess what it will be like in 3 weeks%26#39; time.
